HP DL140 G3 and Windows 2008

Anyone running a DL140 with 2008 server on it, i've found a drivers section on HP for 2008 but i'm a little unsure about the embedded SATA controller i seem to remember it giving me a few problems when i put 2003 on and i'm not exactly sure which driver it requires. HP storage manager doesn't give much info.

Having looked at HP quickspecs for the G3, I can see that there are several options for your server.

 

I think you need to get the back off and find out what card you've got, if any. As there are several controllers listed as options it could be any of them.

 

Quickspecs is a very useful tool with HP servers, I recommend you use it

I've poured over the quick specs many times and it doesn't give much info on the embeded card (it just says HP Embedded SATA RAID Controller on Non-Hot Plug SATA Models). The problem is that almost all of the options are optional cards that our unit doesn't have and the embedded SATA RAID driver really isn't very forthcoming when you look on the driver list on the HP site. It's also not clearly marked on the board.

Oh, I see... hmm. If it's an onboard controller there's a good chance that 2008 will just support it out of the box. Have you tried just installing it to see what happens?

 

Another idea, if you have an Ubuntu live cd you could boot it, go into terminal and type "lspci". That should give you a clue as to what controller you've got. It's probably an intel or lsi controller so you should be able to download and use their drivers from the internet.

I find that most HP Server ones if you download them and try and install them it checks the system before actually installing and if it hadn't got any hardware for it, then it says nothing needed and ends, is this not the case for this 140?

Why don't you just slipstream all drivers? Windows setup will then just use the driver it requires automatically. I also find it useful in the event of disaster recovery. It might be years down the line, but if all you have to do is insert one disc and re-install Windows, it makes life a lot easier instead of 'searching' for drivers!

 

Not so long ago I came across a technician who wasted an hour doing just this. Couldn't get the right driver for the onboard controller and messing about with floppy discs.
