I'm a firm believer in the idea of working smart, not hard. It suits my laid-back attitude, too.

 

Today, by replacing a switch, I've accomplished two tasks by design, and a third completely by coincidence. Kind of like a multiplier bonus.

 

We have an old noisy switch near a music room. Because said switch generates a lot of noise, it gets switched off frequently due to the plug being within reach (I will be taking steps to remedy this in future). It's also only a 10-baseT switch, meaning it becomes a little bit of a bottle-neck.

 

So now, not only is that building's network faster, but it won't get turned off in future due to noise! As for the third item on the menu: Upon examining the top of the comms cabinet, I found the key for another room that went missing after being lent to some contractors.

I put the kettle on, made a cuppa and brought in some choccy biscuits for dunking. Ive got an attempts to kill hitler documentry on the head phones and am sat here slowly going through the media laptops taking notes ont he state ready to bring them all up the same standard.

I'm making myself a steadicam over the holidays. I have a nice ball and socket I got off Ebay that has a M6 bolt that I need to fix a handle to. I got out my power drill an found it is completely knackered from drill loads of 80mm holes in benches when refitting our ICT suites. There in the case was the handle that screws the side and guess what, it's an M6 thread so I have my perfect handle. Now to convince the Bursar that the school owes me a new drill.

By booking a holiday to Cyprus, I will:

 

Have some much needed time off work

Use up some of my holidays which I have to take or I lose them

and

Get a tan

Removed kilometers of old phone and BNC data cabling from the roof spaces and draped around the building, including a 50 pair and associated boxes. This has been looking a mess since I started and was annoying me. As part of this I started to lable up some older DPs for the phones, but as a down side, broke corners off a couple of ceiling tiles, gouged my hand and told the bursar that a very large wooden framed window now looks like swiss cheese from all the old cables (some 30 years+ old dating back 2 previous phone systems) have been removed and its also completely rotten at the top! Whoops, think of the scrap value of all this copper I'm collecting

Ceiling tiles! - I'd forgotten quite how much I dislike them! Nothing else can get you covered in fibreglass so easily - I've taken to wearing goggles when moving them because of the amount which seems to go in my eyes.

+1. It might also be advisable to wear some sort of hat or hairnet because of they're preponsity to deposit tiny bits of [fibreglass is it ?] all over your bonce.

Admit it, you'd all rather have a tiled ceiling when it comes to quick'n'dirty wiring jobs though

 

Edit: One of the lads in sales put on the coffee this morning - custom roasted ethiopian blend - but he always makes it slightly too strong!

1) I don't get pissed off or frustrated by trying to do some work at home with all my gadget distractions!
