The people that host are website are disappearing into the ether and we are looking into getting a new place to host our site. Can anybody reccomend a place (that hopefully wont disappear any time soon).

Before anyone says we should host it ourselves, I would love to. The council only needs to open up the correct ports. Mind you I have been trying to sort out the council (BedsCC) for three years. I guess I have to keep asking for at least a couple years more. Until then we will stick to remote hosting.

At the moment the website uses asp for a bit of database work but nothing special otherwise. I'm sure when i was into this a good few years ago you could get hosting for about £25 a year. Now it seems to cost at least £70.

Funny, we're with Beds council and we can do our own website hosting. Does Russell House do your support? If so, ask to speak with Bob Mahoney or Tim Colling, they're very helpful when I speak to them, Bob especially.

On topic, avoid Easyspace. We're with them and I am spectacularly unimpressed with them.

Russell House manage the internet connection but don't do any support within the school. I've found Bob helpful but he has failed to produce the goods!

I started with Streamline but didn't like their interface. Currently hosting the Giraffe site on http://www.servage.net - seem quite professional apart from the hiccup the other day with their fiber (4hrs outage). Other than that no problems - unlimited SQL dbs, 1110GB transfer every month, 75Gb space... £5.75/month (£69/yr)

I sublet my area to friends to reduce the cost.

...i can get unlimited ...

Just as a note of caution... "unlimited" is a keyword to avoid for a school site. Home sites may be ok but there's no such thing as "unlimited" and a look at webhostingtalk.com forums will show you just how many hosts and customers have come a cropper using or believing it.

For my own recommendation, http://www.flump.net are good for a managed solution or you could opt for a VPS at http://www.rackforce.com so you have full root control over what you can and can't do (although at much greater expense)

I find their databases slow and also the downtime is not uncommon, there has been many occasions where my site was down before i switched hosts.

I am now with dreamhosts and have had a good time with them but others have complained. You can get coupons to get a full years hosting for $7 and then its $150 or something.
