chrbb Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 I'm curious how people on here that just backup to disk manage to meet requirements for data protection archiving, some data needs to be kept for 7+years now. Also what about if you need to hunt down some files from two + years ago? What sort of data needs to be kept for that length of time?
cookie_monster Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 I'd have to dig into the regulations again to be specific but I’m thinking financial, payroll, personnel data. I think we're required to keep student work for a certain amount to time as well.

teejay Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 One thing you want to add is a fire proof data safe, which wants to be in a secure location away from where the backup server is, ideally in another building. The current data security recommendations are not to take backups offsite unless going to a certifed secure data storage facility, so taking backups home is now a very big no no, even if they are encrypted.

School in suffolk burnt to the ground, only reason why they have SIMS database with data in it, is the fact the technician took the backup tape offsite. So long as SLT\governers are happy, I can't see a problem. Still having arrangement with another school is a better idea. Fireproof should be a bad banned in my opinion, along with Vista, VLE... "...should be stored in a fire proof data safe."

We’re looking into the possibility of swapping weekly or fortnightly backups with another local school. We currently have backups in a separate building so only a terrorist attack or airliner landing on the sight should be a problem. Edited October 29, 2009 by cookie_monster
banksy Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 whilst the building may be fireproof the building certainly wont, and the safe may not be heat or waterproof. Even if the safe survives it could take weeks to get access to it and into it. Better to store the backups offsite somewhere safe. Paul
