I would do it all in house, but time is a bit on the short side this summer.

 

Perhaps their should be a poll on this, but unless you've got helpers I don't think a (6 week) summer hol is enough to start from scratch and have a good, solid 2K8 based system ready for roll-out. Trouble is that depends on agreeing a definition of "good, solid". Are we allowed Vanilla vs. Vanilla debates?

 

PS: Or debates about why people reckon a 3rd party all-the-bits-off-the-shelf "vanilla" Windows is significantly different from a CC3? I have a few problems spotting the difference. [With CC4 that's much easier]. What is "plain Windows", do you have to make it all yourself and how much 3rd party s/w are you allowed to have in what context?

Ranger with 2 x 2k3 servers

 

We have just ordered 4 new servers, a SAN and, along with the two above servers, are creating a nice little virtual Citrix Farm.

 

This easter tho, we are moving to a vanilla network. Thank goodness!

I've done it in three weeks, learning as went, before now - moving from NT4 to 2k3 with two domains, 400 clients, etc etc.

Migrated from Netware 6.5 with a mixture of Windows 98/NT/2000/XP desktops 2.5 years ago to AD running on Server 2003 now with Windows XP desktops only. We also have about 100 MACs integrated with our AD.

 

Used to use RM Easymail for email communications, then went to a 3rd party MOSS2007 provider with Email included. They started to charge us for email use in November so I installed Exchange 2007 on a Win 2008 box and went live mid December.

 

Installed MOSS 2007 2 weeks ago and had Capita install the SLG2 on top of it last week, with a hope to installing SLK on top of that next week and going live in about 8 weeks to staff, students in September and parents in October.

 

Plans in the pipeline include a printing contract that will see us loose all of our current printers for a fully managed and audited print system in place hopefully during the Whitsun holiday.

We use Windows 2003/2008. Ubuntu (for most linux projects). Debian (for proxmox) and openFiler.

Software on top? What software on top? Scripting + AD does nearly everything I need to do. Add in VNC/ABTutor Control for remote access (slowly introducing vPro machines now too). That's about it...

i might suggest ghost as software on top still quite useful though granted less than it used to be

 

6 weeks should be more than adequate i managed a rebuild from scratch of a primary school s servers (2003 and 2008) and probably about a 100 pcs/laptops in a week most of the time without any help. The old setup decided to lunch the gc on both servers somehow and i got fed up of repairing as it was never right so i just gave in and rebuilt and tbh the network is better for it its 100% mine all policies/profiles packages etc no holdovers from other techs
