rad Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Currently with an engineer sorting out our ID system, not a regular visit so dont know him that well. The thing is I am no where near my office and therefore down with him as he needs questions answering etc. Do you normally leave them to it or wait with them?
kmount Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 If he needs questions to be answered you should be with him. It forms up in many support contracts that during a visit, someone with required information will be present at all times should the need arise.
cromertech Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I usually ask if they mind me going to fix a couple of things while they are there. I try not to leave them for too long though. always check to see how they are progressing every 15 mins or so.
deanc Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 you could argue that as the engineer has probably not been CRB checked that a member of staff should be with them at all time. also, do you nescessarily know that they are not making changes that could compromise the security of your network to resolve a particular problem that they are having, particularly important if it is an IT product that is being installed and they have domain admin rights.
Sylv3r Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I always find it useful if they are fixing something to watch how they sort it out so you know for future reference. Also its good to pick their brains on other issues you may have or future changes so I tend to stick with them or at least another member of the ICT Support Team.
PiqueABoo Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 If you only knew how painful it can be when you're trying to concentrate on some seriously difficult technical job with someone who doesn't understand half the answers you give them spot-welded to your shoulder. Occasional progress visits, at least one with a coffee, and the means to get hold of you relatively quickly for info is about right.
budgester Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Unless it's during the holidays, someone stays with them at all times. If they have a CRB check, then they can go round the school on their own. It's not worth the risk of for them or us, if a student accuses them of something or even if a student tries to nick their tools.
