andyrite Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Anybody got it yet? Been pressing that damm refresh upgrades button for days now!
Ric_ Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I was told by Gav yesterday that Monday was the day.
Danielbarron Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 We've recently taken on (yes SmoothWall continue to grow) a dedicated Development Manager and he, along with Tom and our support staff will be organising a more formal beta testing programme. This means some people will have access to stuff sooner and can bend our ear more. If interested, for now, contact Tom. Monday is still the plan unless anything pretty major crops up in our testing at the very last minute. There are some minor blemishes we already know about and these will be addressed within a couple of weeks of release most likely.
tom_newton Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 (edited) Good to see some of you are looking forward to having some new toys! I've just left the southampton office to find my flybe flight to Leeds has been binned. Gah. Should have taken the boss's advice an flown the more costly, but more reliable option - SmoothWall customer Eastern Airways My short sojourn on the south coast has been informative - as Dan says, we have Flemming, our new dev manager, so I have spent my days discussing FP3, and the next version (2010) with them. There are going to be some big changes... All those who responded to my calls for testing help - I haven't forgotten you. We've already managed one demo of the new interface (thanks Tony), and we will be gathering more opinions form you folk over the coming months. Edited March 28, 2009 by tom_newton typo
john Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Sounds good, I hope Smoothwalls servers are ready for our influx of 8am demands for the software DOS attack against Smoothwall anyone
contink Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 DOS attack against Smoothwall anyone Shhhh.. That was supposed to be a secret...
FN-GM Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I know i am pushing and sorry to hijack but whats happening with development on smoothwall express?
tom_newton Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 FN: Right this second, not a lot except patches. OTOH, there's *big* plans for 4.0 over the next 12 months, just in the process of getting them finalised. Hopefully include a lot more open access to our community as well...
Danielbarron Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Sounds good, I hope Smoothwalls servers are ready for our influx of 8am demands for the software DOS attack against Smoothwall anyone It won't be 8am. Late morning at the earliest. And even still it is possible a last minute huge bug might be found thus delaying. Also you should read this: https://support.smoothwall.net/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=340 before rushing to upgrade in case some of the issues affect you. We already have fixes but it takes time to test so those it will be at some point during April they will be released That article will be updated as more information becomes available.
john Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I love the fact that the SSL stuff doesn't like the Smoothwall Support Site Whoops!
tom_newton Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I love the fact that the SSL stuff doesn't like the Smoothwall Support Site Whoops! brought to you by the "irony in features dept."
Danielbarron Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) I love the fact that the SSL stuff doesn't like the Smoothwall Support Site Whoops! It's the other way round. The support site uses a commercial 3rd party program called Kayako. Its in-built licensing thinks there is a mismatch between which domains have been paid for and which you are visiting. Strangely it does this on the client end. So it's not SSLI that does not like the support site but the support site that does not like SSLI. Unfortunately that part of the Kayako software is closed source so we can't fix it so we have to add a work-around to SSLI. The irony is not lost on me though Edited March 30, 2009 by Danielbarron
contink Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 As as aside, I've heard "wonderful" things about Kayako and their own support model... Colleague of mine in the States has pointed out that they lost hair because of the inept business, support and general communication strategies from the company..
DrCheese Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Does this apply to network guardian as well? Our LEA provided us with a license for it and I've been testing it recently to replace my own custom dansguardian/squid setup
tom_newton Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 DrCheese: yes, this applies to all '08 SmoothWall products. The updates are "per module" so you'll naturally only get what's relevant (eg. you won't get firewall updates) 1
ssiruuk2 Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Just installed FP2 - thought initially it had killed my Smoothwall! Went to the server and the hard drive light was on solid chugging away after the reboot so waited ten mins and it came back online. Report function does look much better Going to look into the SSL enhancements tomorrow.

Went to the server and the hard drive light was on solid chugging away after the reboot so waited ten mins and it came back online. Very likely it's been a while since you rebooted and it took the opportunity for a disk check. Same thing happened to one of the developers' home smoothies today. He thought it dead but no - was just running a disk check. We are looking at reducing or removing disk checks such as moving to a different file system in the next major version. For example: ext4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
contink Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Can I ask... Is there an index of the reports available and what information they actually provide... Trying to go through them all manually is very time consuming and frustrating as I have no idea where to find basic stuff like blocked sites for specific groups, etc... so I can troubleshoot the filter. Thx in advance 1
