Environment Monitoring

Hi

 

Does anyone use any environment monitoring hardware in their server room which emails/texts them etc. when variables going squiffy!

 

The main thing I'm interested in monitoring is the heat in the room.

Yup 1-wire temperature monitor hooked into the serial port of my nagios server.

since moving office away from the server room and the fact i very rarely visit it anymore might be time for 1 of these babies now summer is on its way. hopefully the aircon should be good this summer had it all serviced just after all the snow!

The card can have additional sensors added to it... I just haven't.

 

In the bottom of my rack is the ups and the room would have to fill to approx. 4" deep before reaching that. I think that the bursars next door would spot the water pouring under the door before this point (I hope so anyway)!

 

At the end of the day, it is about the level of 'acceptable risk'. In an ideal world we'd monitor everything, have redundant systems in redundant buildings and have instant fail over. You way up how much downtime you can afford against the cost of implementing these things though.

You just know the cleaners would end up using a carpet/floor cleaner on the floor after you have left and been home for an hour or so and it would set the sensors / alarms off only for you to come in to be told oh sorry I was just cleaning the server rooms floor.

The moisture probes I have are mounted against the floor - so the water only has to be at 1mm high to set the system bleeping. It also is in the line of the aircon pump, so if that pops and covers it in water, it bleeps then too.

You let cleaners near your servers?!?!

My NM takes care of this, but I know our core switch is a Cisco behemoth with more sensors than God. Even the power supply modules have their own SNMP interface. Many of the individual smaller switches also have built-in sensing, along with the temperature monitoring in the IBM blade centres.
