ClaireJoanne Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Hi there I am wanting to buy a laser printer for our primary school and wonder if anyone can recommend a good model. It is to be our main printer in school, used by all pupils and staff. The one we currently use is a Minolta Magicolor and I guess we output about 50-75 pages a day. I was thinking in the price region of £350-400. Any ideas? Cheers

BatchFile Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Two Epson C1100(N)s ! I know they have their critics but we find them to be great (disposable) workhorses in the computer rooms - at £150 each with remanufactured toners available cheaply they're great value for money

HP Have increased their prices a couple of times this year. I guess all suppliers have but HP seem to have done more than most. mabye you should get your supplier to advertise on edugeek with those wicked prices im sure he will benefit lol

Tallwood_6 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Have a couple of the HP3505s and HP3525n's, the 3525's are of a better build and the print quality a definate step up but the tonner costs for the new HP colours are quite a jump by comparison.
SteveR Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Hey all We have just had to stop using our Konica Magicolor 5440 due to the toner costs becoming waaay out of control, it now stands at £620 to replace with Konica toner.. Crazy. Our mono printer has just packed up aswell (great timing ) So we are in the market for a new colour laser and a mono laser. They need to have quite a high duty cycle per month (~5000 sheets) as we love to send things to the printer and not collect them . Any suggests? Anyone have a Dell 3130cn? I have my eyes on it as it is getting some very good reviews, comes in at about £410 to replace all toner and black at high capacity (9000 sheets) £359 for the printer. I have been looking at that Hp cp3505n which is mentioned a few times in this thread. Noticed that it is quite an old printer (2007?) is toner widely available? Have seen mentioned that 3rd party toner can be bought for it, who is the best supplier for this? For the mono we had a HP 4050N which was good until it died, I was looking at getting another HP but now seems like the new range of mono HPs many people aren't overly impressed with. I was looking at the Xerox Phaser 3435, quite a new printer but good reviews and duplex about £110 to replace hicap toner. £215 for the printer. Thanks for any suggests.
localzuk Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 For the mono, i'd recommend grabbing a Brother HL-5250DN if you can source one (CP LTD have some, we've just bought 2 to replace 2 dead, old, printers). And on the colour, I'd recommend the HP CP3505 if you can get them (again, I believe CP have some left). Toner availability is fine. Ok, both of those printers are EOL but they both have excellent running costs and are nice and cheap to buy initially too - usually you get one or the other. 1
Smee Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 we use Kyocera C5015cn lasers, a bit more expensive that you quoted but the toners pretty cheap as far as toner goes and it's the only thing that need replacing. Haven't had any trouble with them, we have 3 across the school and with 600+ pupils printing to them I would recommend them. HTH.

Our mono printer has just packed up aswell (great timing ) That printer is still more economical than the Hp CP3505 though (by a much smaller margin now, but still a little cheaper), as you can get the 12k carts cheaper than 2x 6k cartridges. Bear in mind your quoted £620 will be high capacity cartridges, so would be cheaper than the HP if compared like-for-like with the 6k cartridges. In saying that, we have a 5450 on contract hire from LnL so may look to replace it shortly as I agree that it is becoming expensive to run, so may look towards the newer 5650EN model, which has fanstastic economy for what it is! We still have a few 5430 printers which are even worse!

We still have a few 5430 printers which are even worse! Hmm yes you are right they are 12k thought they were more like 9k, so it does slightly work out cheaper to run the 5440. We also have our 5440 with LnL who haven't been too bad with toner prices, however now it is just become insane from LnL and other suppliers. To be spending this kind of money every 2-3 months we simply can't afford anymore, we are only a primary school so shouldn't really be needing to spend this amount of money so often on printer running costs. I too have been looking at LnL's Konica 5650EN offer seems good but what is strange (and probably a typo?) is their toner yield figures they have carts that do 30k. Konica Minolta Magicolor 46xx Print Unit Kit (CYM) A0310NH £322.75 "Yield up to 30,000 pages each @ 5% coverage" 30,000 pages?! They can't be serious.. surely? Edit: Print Unit Kit? dgsmith Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 yes, the print unit is the drum and typically will always be able to last for a longer period then the toners themselves. I did a comparison chart not long ago for our 5430, 5440 and 5650 printers, and the 5650s are definately cheaper by a long margin. From what I gather, LnL have been able to secure good prices on this printer as it is a current model they are giving to schools, whereas the the 54xx series isn't. We were offered an early upgrade on our 5450 printer to the new 5650 because of the price increases. If you call them up and explain your thoughts, I am sure they would offer this to you as well. The initial cost is around £321 (you get 6k starter carts), which still works out cheaper than the other printer - definately worth it if you have the printer with LnL. Besides that, the 5650EN is an excellent printer!

The Hp CP3505 does seem good however the fact it is end of life puts me off quite a bit, it is also still selling for quite a high price considering it is such an old printer. The LnL offer is tempting but after weighing things up I feel uneasy about binding ourselves to another 3 year contract with them, our borough also do not like the idea. I have had a phone call or two from LnL in the past where they have been pressuring us into buying more toner from them even when the contract stated we only had to do that for the first 4 times. Buying a new colour laser printer is a total minefield, it really is!

Just a quick question... You say its expensive, but the CP3505 is £214.18 at printerland.co.uk or the network version is £299.47. And 2 years isn't that old I don't think, but that may be because I personally had a HP Laserjet 5 for about 8 years, and it was old when I got it... 2 years is nothing What prices have you seen for it?
