beeswax Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 BBC NEWS | England | West Midlands | Lettuce nose-stuffer avoids jail A police spokesperson said that much of the footage was too disgusting to be broadcast and that what we see here is just the tip of the iceberg.
tech_guy Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I wondered what that tangy new dressing was on the salad the last time I went in there....
Dom_ Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I saw this earlier, surely the only prisonable offence in that story was where the woman threw the chair at him!
stu Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I saw this earlier, surely the only prisonable offence in that story was where the woman threw the chair at him! yeah i would quite like to see that footage
tech_guy Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I know, crazy world isn't it where someone can to go to prison for abusing a salad vegetable but we let muggers, rapists and murders out with a slap on the wrist...
Michael Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I heard this on Radio 1. It's disgusting. Always better to make your own. At least you'll know all the ingredients
Hightower Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I saw this earlier, surely the only prisonable offence in that story was where the woman threw the chair at him! I wouldn't like to think I bought a sandwich from that shop. And it's ok to think "well nobodies hurt are they" - the company is hurt. I'll not be going back to Subways anytime soon. And about his defence lawyer saying "he didn't think it would be published on YouTube" - oh, that makes it ok then.
Dom_ Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 To be fair, it's only as bad as sneezing on the lettuce... and you wouldn't go to jail for that
stu Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Think the problem is where they said put it back and he did, because even when u sneeze on it your expected to stop throw away whats there and get fresh before continuing to serve
Dom_ Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I know you'd be expected to replace it, but surely it isn't a prisonable offence to not replace it!
Hightower Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 To be fair, it's only as bad as sneezing on the lettuce... and you wouldn't go to jail for that But its not. This is disgusting, and intended. And as was just said - anybody with an ounze of common decency would chuck it away and get fresh produce. It's like if you cut yourself when chopping something you're supposed to chuck the whole lot away and start from scratch. Fresh knife, cutting board, ingredients, the lot. I'm not saying he deserves a jail term because I think that is way over the top. I'm just saying what he did was immature, disgusting, and most importantly very damaging to the company so he'll get what he deserves. Obviously, some wifey thought he deserved a chair in the face.
Michael Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 It damages a reputation, the brand but also all hygiene regulations. Irrelevant if it was discarded or not, he shouldn't of done it. I just don't understand the motive of some people! 300 hours of unpaid work as the punishment? That's over a month, working on the presumption he works 8 hours per day! Why would Subway still want to employ someone like that? He should of been given community work and enrolled on a food hygiene course.
Dom_ Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I'm not saying i condone what he did, but a jail term shouldn't even be considered. Whereas the woman who threw the chair at him should have been done for assault!
rolfea Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Jail is abit far. I would have sacked him, but not jail.
Hightower Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I'm not saying i condone what he did, but a jail term shouldn't even be considered. Whereas the woman who threw the chair at him should have been done for assault! If I found out I was eating lettuce that had been up somebodies nose he would have had a bit more than a chair chucked at him.
rolfea Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 If I found out I was eating lettuce that had been up somebodies nose he would have had a bit more than a chair chucked at him. but then you'd run over a cyclist throwing the chair was abit much I think, and yes could be considered assault. But more to the point I think it's damaging property which isn't her own. I could be wrong, isn't that vandalism?
Dom_ Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 If I found out I was eating lettuce that had been up somebodies nose he would have had a bit more than a chair chucked at him. That's assuming he did this on a daily occurence, which is doubtful
Hightower Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 but then you'd run over a cyclist throwing the chair was abit much I think, and yes could be considered assault. But more to the point I think it's damaging property which isn't her own. I wouldn't run over a cyclist - I love them! Maybe she did commit an offence by throwing a chair. But surely this bloke also carried out vandilism by damaging property that doesn't belong to him - namely the company and its good customer base.
Guest theeldergeek Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 what we see here is just the tip of the iceberg. ...no pun intended I'm sure!
pete Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 (edited) I'm having trouble working out what he was actually charged with. The article mentions: "Shannon, who was prosecuted under the miscellaneous provisions in the Public Order Act, could have been jailed for up to six months. " So this was a Public Order offence? Incitement to violence? I'm assuming he wasn't stuffing lettuce up his nose as an everyday pasttime, so (as I understand it): Woman walks into Subway Recognises lettuce stuffer from youtube Is instantly sufficiently enraged she feels justified throwing a chair at him. Why aren't we hearing more about the idiot woman who assaults people? (no, I don't agree with his lettuce stuffing, but if it's illegal to stuff lettuce up your nose, only criminals with have lettuce up their noses). Edit: Offence he was actually charged with: Walsall magistrates warned him he could face time in jail after hearing him plead guilty to contaminating or interfering with goods with intent to cause economic loss and alarm, anxiety or injury to the public. http://www.expressandstar.com/2009/03/05/subway-worker-put-lettuce-in-nose/ Edited March 12, 2009 by pete

Put the lettuce up his nose or work in subway ? and what of the woman who hurled a chair at him......does throwing a chair at someone not merit a custodial sentence ?
