External Access for Moss 2007

We have been running Moss 2007 for about a year successfully internally for Staff and Students, we now want to enable users to access this externally over the internet.

How do you do this, I can't find any step by step guides, does anyone know of any good walk throughs.

I think it's to do with Alternate Access Mappings.

You need to configure the alternate access mappings to resolve the URL you will use, so if your going to go to it via http://intranet.yourschool.county.sch.uk you put the info in the AAM section so it maps correctly, then just point that name to the IP of your box (or ISA is your publishing it via ISA Server if your Sharepoint box doesn't have a direct external IP) and it should then work.

I believe you will have to setup Alternate access mappings for say Extranet, and then point OpenDNS to that server..

We do this at our place - published by ISA now, but you still need to get the AAM right.

 

I will post some screenies of this tomorrow which demonstrate our setup.

Thanks for the quick reply guys, no we don't use ISA but it is part of my plan in the future!

I've looked at AAM and I'm assuming you goto edit public url, I've placed an entry eg H-SPHERE in the extranet field but when I try to save it, the option is greyed out.

I've seen a drop down for AAM collections, which gives me 3 options :

 

1 central administration

2. that is used for my sites

3. sharepoint - 80

 

I've selected the 3rd option and this made the save option available. I've saved this, and then tested but get nothing.

Sure I'm missing the obvious here!

Try extending the web application that you want to use, then applying the external AAM onto that. I believe you'll probably want Internet zone rather than Extranet, but I'll have to check tomorrow.
