sippo Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I have an issue with 3 PC's where the my documents aren't redirecting properly. They get redirected to the users Home drive. It works fine everywhere else in the school just not on these pc's. Any idea's? The steps I have done are: - Reimaged PC. - Renamed PC - Checked in correct OU. - Deleted any local profiles - we use mandatory. - Forced a group polciy update.
Michael Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 What OS are you running on these three machines? Windows XP or Vista and which Service Pack?
sippo Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 XP SP3. This is throughout the school, and the PC's are the same as ones that work.
Michael Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Haha pass What about if you swap the hard drives over from a machine that does work correctly?
sippo Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 That would take those PC's 'out of action' then.
Michael Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I'm trying to determine if it's something else by swapping the hard drives over. Are these three machines in the same physical network location?
tech_guy Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Does the redirection fail with all users or just certain ones?
Dom_ Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Try rebooting the switch they're connected to. Did you rename them to the same thing? Try using a random name and see what happens
sippo Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 The redirection fails with all users and are on the same switch, but 'working pc's' are also on the same switch. I've tried renaming the PC's to something random, but still no joy.
smadison Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Do they run a lot of SIMS Reports on those systems as sometimes SIMS will change things to the documents and settings folder?
Dom_ Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Try plugging them into a different switch and see if it makes a difference
ricki Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Hi What I would do is. Reboot the switch. Try the machine again. Switches sometimes turn ports off if they are having problems with lots of traffic from that port. If that does not work try the machine in a known working port. Next check if the computer is picking up the correct ip address subnet, gatway and dns. Some times people fix the ip and that can be wrong. If the computer if picking up an apipa address then you have a problem with the cable or the nic card. Try deleting and reinstalling the nic card driver. If you still have no joy. If the machine is out of warranty try another nic card in the machine and see if you have the same problem. If you still have a problem you need to see if its a hardware or software problem. Move the harddrive to another machine of the same type and spec and try that if that fixes it its hardware in the case. If it does not run a hard drive testing program on the hard drive and see if the drive is ok. If it is then it has to be a corrupt os so repair or reinstall or ghost the machine. Richard
sippo Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 Sims is hosted out of school, so that wouldn't be an issue. I'll try a different switch port.
Heebeejeebee Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 If these machines have been re-installed try this: Check the fdeploy.dll version (c:\windows\system32 & c:\windows\system32\dllcache). If it's 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2113) then there lies your problem I suspect. We've had this issue with SP3 but only with machines that had XP re-installed from a SP3 slipstreamed CD. This problem does not happen if you install XP to SP2 level then upgrade to SP3. Here's what I do: Install XP SP2, install SP3 then copy the fdeploy.dll from SP2 (5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)) into both system32 and dllcache. This works for us. HBJB
sippo Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 @hbjb. We upgraded from SP2 to Sp3. I have plugged PC into different switch port, but nothing. It picks up an IP fine, and can ping it via name so DNS is fine. I'll probably reboot the server tonight to eliminate that issue.

Michael Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 What do the event logs say on the machines which are failing to redirect?
sippo Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 A couple of noteable things: - The Group Policy client-side extension Folder Redirection failed to execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension - Windows has detected that Offline Caching is enabled on the Roaming Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored.
TheScarfedOne Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Try doing a GP Results against the machines after logging on to them and see what is/isnt bwing applied. This will also show any errors.
Michael Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Could you make sure 'Grant the user exclusive rights to My Documents' is unticked. User Config > Windows Settings > Folder Redirection > My Documents > Settings tab
sippo Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 Could you make sure 'Grant the user exclusive rights to My Documents' is unticked. User Config > Windows Settings > Folder Redirection > My Documents > Settings tab Thanks, but they are all unticked in the OU. But can't find that setting on the local PC.
Michael Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Sorry I should of been clearer, that setting is on your server only!
Bezwick Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 We had a similar problem to this with clients after we upgraded to SP3. We needed to add an empty My Documents folder to the mandatory profile folder then it worked again fine. Might be worth a look.
