rad Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I have yet to go on a CC4 training (yawn) course at RM but a collegue said you can rebuild with a CD or the USB, question is do these have to stay in for the entire rebuild or just to connect up to the server? (like the floppy disk before)

Low build version disk you will need to leave it until machine reboots etc. USB Disks not sure at what point can remove it will ask and report back. Russ
Michael Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Given the choice I would boot from a custom CD rather than USB. I'm sticking my neck out here, but I would say any PC from 10 years ago 'should' be able to boot from CD. Only newer PCs can boot from USB.

I believe USB can be removed at the same point you can remove a CD. I would NOT recommend building a low RAM (256MB) PC at all, because CC4 XP currently seems to use something like 580MB before you run anything else i.e. it will spend all it's time paging.

Tallwood_6 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 CC4 vista is near 700mb idle, wouldnt bother with the usb build disks unless you have some relatively new machines which you know will boot from USB, i warn you now that most of the RM F-Series machines dont so will need a cd drive.

sparkeh Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 The only slightly annoying thing is that quite a few models of RM machines's BIOS don't come with a boot selector so you have to either turn WDS off after every build or change the boot order each time. Though saying that, you should only need to PXE build once per machine as after that you get the RM boot manager anyway to launch builds. 1
bignel Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Yeah thats the way we looked at it, we went CC4 in the summer and to get all machines built we turned on PXE boot to save running round with flash drives, use it very rarely now.
