Has anyone used the print management facility in R2 yet?

 

Reading the article on http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Deploying-Printers-Group-Policy-Windows-R2.html it looks quite good (if it works)

 

Just ordered a R2 disc (schools agreement) to rebuild a server during half term.

Waiting to build a new server so i can do this two and get rid of logon scripts.

 

Also 2003 rc2 has improved DFS as now only parts of updated files are replicated as opposed to the whole file.

It does look very good, though you do need to have a script applied via GPOs, I think it's a Startup one.

 

Unfortunately we don't have the money to upgrade all our servers at the moment

Im going to be doing the same soon. it's costing about £44 a server.

That was standard but now you have said that I better check the feature list as I only made an initial enquiry yesterday and didnt give that much thought.

Holy $^%^%^ . Yes I will have get some prices although I doubt they will be much different and see what version I need.

Having looked through the comparison sheet I am still unsure why I would need Enterprise edition. It doesnt however state about features like the file filters and printer jiggery pokery on there as I can see. Would anyone like to enlighten me?

There is an executable (called pushprinterconnections.exe or something similar iirc) that needs to be run as either a startup or a login script. What that does is look at the OU the user/pc account is in and see if there are any per user/PC deployed printers present. If there are, it automagically maps them. You can chose whether the printer is mapped per user or per PC with the print management console.

 

Sadly per PC mapping doesn't work in Win2k but per user works well enough.

So Im assuming I just need standard then as that has the two main features I want? Well I only really want the file filtering but the printer thing is a bonus even though its already taken care off at the mo.

Yup, you'd be right there. Enterprise does have some advantages but if its just file and print management you're looking at, Standard will do you fine.

Yeah had another look through the features list and theres nothing I would miss. I mean I think I can live without the ability to hot swap memory . The thing with Identity server did catch my eye but only briefly.

Just wait for LH Server, thats going to be good, read a lot of stuff on it today, as well as had some info on it at the conference I was at the other day.
