We are currently all sat in the office working on the dev plan for the next 3years. i currently am writing a document listing what we want to buy/lease. currently have:

  • replace laptops,
  • managed wireless,
  • another laptop trolley (dont say a word!)
  • additional stations (new build)
  • Additional server possibility (due to load of new stations/laptops)
  • new rack cabs for server room,
  • more digi visualisers,

at this point my brain stops, well i know by three months after the dev plan has being approved we will think of really cool things, but we need to know now.

so then wonderful edu geeks if you were me what would you be buying???

SAN, rolling replacement of switching gear, network backbone upgrades, network cable replacment if some of your cable old cat5 and you want gig to the station, additional managment/backup software required by upgrades to new OS and changing requirements

are just a few things that you may want or need to consider.

bank of netbooks for student use outside of class

upgrade internet line (if possible)

desktops for all rooms with interactive whiteboards (again if poss)

just ideas off the top of my head that may/may not apply to your school

You've really got to think about projectors too. Are they going to be any good in 3 years? What is the bulb replacement availability going to be? Nothing worse then finding no one stocks the bulbs anymore, especially when it hasn't been budgeted for. (wasn't my fault ;))

What can we spend money on?

Hmm. Tricky question. You need an expert to advise you - I'm available for very reasonable consultancy fees...

Seriously, I'd say "hardware", in general - don't pay for software, you can get that for free. Spend money on actual stuff that people can actually use.
