xbox 360 crossover to pc

was up at a mates the other night trying to see if i could get his xbox360 to play avi files from his pc with just a crossover cable between the two.

 

Is it possible? Or does it have to go through a switch and does it require internet access?

 

Had them both just set to a static 192.168.2.x ip on the same subnet, but couldnt even ping the xbox. Do they reply to ping? Id never been anywhere near one so didnt really have a scooby what I was doing.

Depends on the OS I'm afraid.

 

I used to be able to do it wirelessly, but M$ took away the functionality.

You need XP with Media Centre or Vista Ultimate / Home which has media centre as an integral part.

Has he installed the Additional Media Support update from Live? Otherwise DivX won't work.

If he has, all he should need is Windows Media Player 11, not Media Center.

If not he'll need to either reencode the files to WMV or get something to transcode them on the fly.

The thing is, they are not even seeing each other, no ping reply etc.

 

It works over the wireless, but both are so far away from the AP that its useless, just want to connect them to each other separately.

not sure if it works via Xover, but i can vouch for only needing WMP11, as thats how i stream my divx and xvid. you just enable media sharing on it and the 360 picks it up.

 

how about just a cheapo 4 port hub, something like a tenner job. i know its more expense than a xover cable, but it would eliminate the probs

There should be no reason why this wouldn't work not something i tend to have people do and i have a switch so i wouldn't know either.

 

When i get home i will have a go at doing it and let u know

 

Suppose it would be cheaper to just buy a small 4 port switch though.

This can actually be a DRM issue. My 360 refused to talk to my PC after I upgraded the CPU.

 

It turned out to be a DRM problem, even though I had no DRM'd media on the PC.

 

Try this:

 

Do a search over drive C: for DRM*.*. It should find a folder. Delete the contents of this folder and try to reconnect to the 360.

 

Worked for me.

I just plugged in a xver cable, gave them both and IP, and assumed they would just work

XBMC is Xbox Media Centre. works a treat when you need to access PC's

Media Center Extender works a treat if you have Vista MCE, picks up on the network automatically and then you've got all your PC music, videos, pics etc accessible thru the 360

 

Even better if you get a remote for MCE like this (bout 15 quid)

I know it looks like a relic from the 80's but works really well (actually the retroness was the reason I got it )

 

It controls MCE and works on the 360 as well (seems the media center button and the 360 power button are coded the same, as I found out when starting MCE and the Xbox spun up at the same time!)

Getting back to the thread...i use Tversity to stream my music and video....but i've also found a program called Orb, which streams live video. So when my bf uses Sopcast or something to watch his football we can set it up to display on the TV instead of having to watch it on the laptop!
