We have had a problem twice this week which turned out to be a switch playing up.

We have a cisco router at the edge which connects to our LEA. This connects to a switch (HP Procurve 2626). The problem seems to be that the port stops working or something similar. Resetting the switch seems to solve the issue.

The odd thing is that it has occurred twice, at 12:53 - once on Tuesday, and once today. The time may be a coincidence though.

Anyone got any ideas what could be doing this?

Have you got any automated tasks which send data to the LA around that time of day, or anything similarly which might be making heavy use of the switch?

Is the port that the router is set to configured to auto?

If so find out what it should be to match the router supplied by your lea and configure it to that.

The port that the router is connected to is set to manual - 100Mb full duplex.

There aren't any tasks that run over lunchtime - other than our anti-virus scan, which runs at half 12, but wouldn't use much switch bandwidth, and wouldn't communicate with the router at all.

The log doesn't show anything - other than the fact i reset the switch.

Have about changing the port's setting to auto so it can auto negotiate the speed. I would only set it to manual if you can be sure that the router's ports is set to the same.

It is the correct setting, as this was what I was told to do by the LEA.

Tried a different port?

No. As it has only happened twice, and i've not had much a chance to do that sorta thing yet. I'll try switching it tonight.

Have you tried ringing HP or a 'show tech all' output?

Is the switch part of a stack or decided it would just LOVE to join one?

We have a switch is part of a stack and although it only has several devices attached, it will occasionally die for no good reason...

Then you might be looking at a problem we had a while back...

The switch which was at the "end" of the stack has to switch all the data from all the other switches too, which puts a huge load on it... and when we had a whole building on a stack, it died... it didn't really like having a whole floor on one stack either... we were using HP 2524's with the Stacking Modules though.

It's not a true stack, just a virtual stack - ie. it allows single point of management, but doesn't actually do much else.

I take it they all run the latest firmwares etc? :)

ahh, my bad, not used Virtual Stacks (just assumed they were the same, but not using a dedicated stacking module), since we use PCM over here.
