decent GB switch for 2gb video files?

Can anyone recommend a gb switch (that they've used) that will happily handle regular hammering with ~2Gb video files? Assume up to 48GB being transferred within a 50 minute period. Files will be transferred simultaneously (12x2Gb at start and end of lesson).

 

It's for media depts prospective imacs.

I have 2 of thier unmanaged 24 port GB switched and they run quite nicely.

Is that your comment on the Misco page* for that switch? (Revoo http://www.revieworld.com/affiliate/reviews/msc?id=undefined&manufacturer=Netgear&model=GS748TEU&sku=undefined ) If so, how noisy is "a bit"? Is it "Could comfortably work with this in a cabinet on the wall behind me" noisy or louder?

Not my comment, but they are very affordable and have quite a few management features without breaking the bank.

We've just bought one of these (Procurve 2848) along with some 2650s and 2626s. They're not set up yet though so I don't know for sure how good it is. Its a big bugger though!

I have a Procurve 2824 which has 24 copper gigabit ports (four have mini-gbic slots shared with them). It isn't as deep as a 2650 IIRC but it aint silent (2 fans I think).

 

I think it was about a grand.

With this amount traffic would it be better to setup multicast on the switches to make it less bandwidth hungry and efficient traffic processing.

Forgot to mention, you can also use port trunking (on the HPs) or other port aggregation so that you effectively get 2, 3, 4 or more gigabits on your link... could maybe help.

Perhaps I should have mentioned, they'll be only blatting files across this switch - the imacs and fileserver will be confined to filesharing on an independent network for (obvious) bandwidth reasons..

 

Thanks for the recommendations - though it would appear other peoples shiny! hardware budgets are bigger than mine.

The netgear GS748-T is the main switch that we use here. They are very reliable but can be a bit on the noisy side as they have 3 fans in them.

I overhauled our network infrastructure last year and got Dell PowerConnect 5324's and a 6024. The list price of the 5324's is 600 but I got them down to around £350, have a talk to Dell and see what they'll give you them for.

 

I've had no problems with any of the switches, not the quietest, but config is easy to do, it's all CLI based on IOS commands (or web for even easier config).
