HP Saving the planet as usual

We ordered a fuser kit for a HP Colour Laserjet 3500 and HP sent it to us in this box (pics attached) with the single fuser kit part and a manual. We have received HP p2005 printers that have smaller boxes, I just cant believe they would waste that much money shipping something so oversized. I think their box designers must work for dell though as dell can be as bad.

Its ridiculous. There was a bit on The Register about HP, they'd sent out a stick of RAM in a laptop sized box.

 

Loads of companies do it though. Received a few cables in a box big enough to fit a CRT in before.

 

Apparantly part of the reason is small packages tend to get lost with couriers. This isnt the answer though, its so wasteful, especially when theres loads of polystyrene that cant be recycled (Art always use our cardboard to paint on so that doesnt go to waste)

How does a box of air and plastic become wasteful? I agree RAM in a laptop box is silly but the box used above isn’t so bad. The card is recycled / recyclable, the foam etc possibly is and it weighs no more than the smaller box so costs no more to ship (same carbon footprint blah blah). What if that was the only size box in stock and your order would be delayed a week to wait for the smaller box, would you complain about that too? I personally would rather have a huge box for a small item than wait an extra week for the right size box.

Now printing a 500 page manual when a PDF is available.......

Ive never seen anywhere that will recycle foam or polystyrene

 

So it all goes to landfill, and while it may not be much in weight, it is in mass

 

And I would expect an enourmous company like HP to have more than one size box in stock!

Aha though, that was a purpose made box for the toner kit, not a box they put it in to ship it. They actually thought "this is the size of the box needed for this" and yes some couriers charge for size as well as weight.

I can definately vouch for other companies sending small items in larger boxes...like one we recieved last week, it is a lamp for a projector yet it came in a huge box...pic is attached. tbh i was quite amused as i expected something else because of the size of the box.
