What antivirus/firewall for Ubuntu?

What antivirus/firewall if any do you use for Ubuntu?

Not Ubuntu, but Debian so should be in your normal repos: clamav and its updater, freshclam. If you want a graphical interface too, add clamtk.

For the not-so-hardcore among us, Shoreline Firewall (aka Shorewall) is what I've always used. If I'm swapping files with windows machines (or have wine installed - yes, some viruses work), I use ClamAV compiled with --enable-experimental.

Don't sweat it, even if you ran a windows virus in wine, because you're not running wine as su it can't escape your home area.

On servers (that handle windows files) I use clamAV

Don't use Ubuntu, but on our Clients and Servers (modified pclinuxos) we run Shorewall Firewall. On the servers we run ClamAV to scan for viruses. On the clients we have no antivirus. We also run a dedicated IPCop (ipcop.org) firewall for the entire school. But that is getting off what you would like to do.

 

Ah, forgot to say, we only have ports 5900 and 5858 for the clients open as those are the iTalc ports. All other ports are blocked.

PcLinux was always great, but production somwhat tailed off recently. However I hear they have 2009 (what was going to be 2008.) in the works..

Yep ClamAV here on our mail/fileservers.

 

As for running Windows viruses on Linux. Linux.com did a compatibility test a few years ago.

Out of the five Windows viruses I ran under Wine, not a single one was able to send email and propagate itself. When I went out of my way to be part of the Windows community by doing my part to propagate Windows viruses (lots of Windows users seem to think this is important, seeing as how they run random executables and use Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer) I discovered that it couldn't easily be done with GNU/Linux tools. Oh sure, I could manually forward these viruses to the folks in my address book, but where's the fun in that? Besides, these viruses usually lie in the From: line and use a handful of different Subject: lines. As a GNU/Linux user, I really don't want to miss out on these important functionalities.

Yeah I agree it's a bit of a shame really, but as we download the repos here I have noticed recently some work going on, rather than a few weeks ago when there wasn't a single change in the repo's at all and when that was going on it was scary!!

Ubuntu includes a firewall per default. See the ubuntufirewall entry on ubuntu wiki.
