Having installed it on my admin pc (dual boot now) first impressions are very good, like the new tool bar keeps things a lot more organised. Will have to give it a few days see if it's stable or not.

 

Although i did like vista the only reason i didn't use it at work was the network copying speed, hopefully this will be better.

 

Not sure i can see it being depolyed across the students network for many years to come though.

I've just noticed this however

A more severe downside of BitLocker to Go is that it is not possible to write to encrypted USB sticks on Windows Vista and Windows XP. Moreover, read access is quite cumbersome. It is not possible to directly open a file in Windows Explorer. After you enter the BitLocker password on Vista or XP, a window pops up where you have to choose which file you want to copy to the desktop.

 

A bit of a shame, as people will have XP/Vista systems at home for years. I'd still much rather have this and deal with a few ease of use issues than have staff members lose yet more keys with tons of data on.

It's still beta so MS could change it tho...

I've installed it on an old desktop at the parents as a dual boot. Sempron 3300+, 1GB DDR RAM clcoked at a nippy 133Mhz and a 250GB HDD. It idles as a fresh install at 278MB usage, down from Vista's 700-800MB so I agree the differences in system footprint are a definate improvment. Looking good on my nippy Samsug Q210 too :)

Of course if it WAS just vista rebranded, it'd not be running like a dream on otherwise cack machines.

Don't take offence but can I assume you're a student of that school rather than staff? Otherwise it would be appropriate to keep criticism constructive. MS haven't done anyone a favour with Vista but it looks like they're putting it right. It's just a shame people will have to pay for it again.

 

But to make comments like that of course you need a frame of reference. Linux? Clearly not. Mac OS? Not worth starting on if you want those peripherals to work either (cheaply).

I know your post was a particularly mild form of the phenomenon, but seriously [s3r5ly ??] how hard is it to type you instead of u.

 

I blame the teachers and the boomers. :p

 

However, it would have been more interesting if they had called it Windows Lemon. Infact Lemon sounds like it should be a niche programming language.

Heh, very true. I hate text speak with a passion, and even text on my phone using full sentences. I should be used to it really but it still grates on me, especially in forums. Moreso in forums of an educational nature! :D

Can I just point out the school is a primary school... so if they were a student, they'd be between the age of 4 and 9...

Of course the bloke is probably 50 odd years old and the best thing to hit IT since someone thought about attaching his pet mouse to a calculator to see if wiggling it would move something on the screen :D

hmm, Everything I've thrown at Windows 7 has worked... largely down to there being Vista drivers for plenty of stuff.

 

only NT was substantially service packed, Vista probably won't see SP3, XP and SP4 is pretty doubtful if Windows 7 works as well it is currently...

Have you used it yet? It actually seems very stable so far, and for a beta the speed and reliability rival the released OSes. Since its built on the foundation of Vista a lot of hardware seems to work with it out the box and the improvements in speed are huge.

It's scary to be honest just how good some of them are even at the very early stages. One of my schools is a government testbed for IT and have an excellent infrastructure with a lot of curriculum based around IT itself. They have a laptop in pieces stuck to a wall with lights and buttons where children are able to identify the processor, hard drive, cd drive, screen, trackpad - and I've stood watching 5 year olds correctly ID every single part. I really do wish I had that level of IT education 25 years ago - and more to the point it worries me a little bit as to how much they'll know in 25 years!

 

Let's just hope they're taught to avoid text speak eh ;)

I've got a 5 yr-old.. fixing names to objects is one significant part of what they do. There's nothing special or clever about bits of computers e.g. you get the same effect with all the pictures in the last inch of an Argos catalog.

In my experience of New Microsoft Operating Systems, it is always better to hold judgment over them until (A) They are released and (B) had two years to mature..

 

If I think my way back to 2001, 2002 and 2003 The same loud mouth Luddites were calling Windows XP worse than trash telling everyone not to touch it even with someone Else's PC.. Then suddenly it is the Best OS on the planet.

 

The only "downfall" Windows Vista really has is its security, Yet ironically in the modern world its the one thing that desktop users need. For instance I have a lady friend I know who has two teenage daughters, over the last couple of years I have had to go around her place and RE-IMAGE her PC about once every three months because her daughters have blitzed the machine with everything under the sun. Even with Norton 360 on it.

 

She bought a New System in August running Windows Vista Home Premium and I have not heard from her once.

 

The way I see it; Microsoft are the ones developing and innovating the software not me; I am in no position to critic any piece of software of theirs for its shortcomings as I am no where near clever enough to develop something like Windows Vista or Ms Office 2007.

 

All New things need to time to develop and open new potential for Computer users.

I think thats the reason you would be re-imaging that pc so often :p

 

I used to work in PC World (don't laugh) and it caused no end of problems with the lower end pcs reducing them to a crawl!
