Which Exchange protection to use?

We've currently got an Exchange 2003 server but have been getting massive amounts of spam recently.

The server has McAffee Groupshield installed, and also GFI MailEssentials (both installed before I started here).

When I started, I purchased Sophos including PureMessage.

My question is, should I remove the McAffee and GFI software and just use Sophos, or can PureMessage run alongside the others?

 

Also, if anybody has setup PureMessage before, how long and complicated is it, as I would want it up and running quite soon after install to keep us as protected as possible.

Have you tried MS's Exchange 2003 filter? Can't remember what it's called, but it works pretty well and updates signatures through normal Windows Updates.

We use Mailwall through OmniQuad so the vast majority of spam doesn't even enter our system.

Hi MK-2,

 

I used to work during 4 years on the French and UK market for GFI before. If GFI MailEssentials is not working you need to check which version you are using and also if you are running the latest build.

 

Antispam solutions need like antivirus to be up to date. If your key has expired long ago, the licence will not be able to block a new spam server installed last month in China or Russia... for example.

 

GFI has released the version 14 last month. In this new version there is 2 antispam engines in one core and you can use it as a multi-layered solution: You can use a hosted solution and keep Mail Essentials locally

We use Puremessage on its own and very little spam gets though to our users, its fairly easy to setup - just follow the prompts basically.

 

I would remove one or the other, having more than 1 AV/Spam filter will only slow things down in the end although they probably will work togeather.
