browolf Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 consider the scenario, teacher is in a computer room, has a crazy class, needs help, there's no telephone and she doesnt want to send any kids out. Currently the only option in this scenario is to request help by email or helpdesk but there's no guarantee anyone will read it in time. What I want is some client server software that the teacher can type in a box and it will either pop up or alert in some fashion on technician's computers. I've looked at internal IM in the past but they're somewhat over complicated to the job as no interaction is required however there may be other uses for such a system. winpopup stuff is disabled, so the answer isnt there. Anyone know any free software like this? or failing that use some sort of internal IM. thx.
Michael Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 You could use Windows Messenger? A lot of LAs block the ports for this however. I remember back at college they had Pegasus mail and this had an IM feature built in.

I've always found msn troublesome, with IM something that would auto use domain accounts would seem best and we use outlook for email.
klawd Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Hi We had the same problem and wrote a little app using vb and mysql. It stores the messages and the sender gets a receipt when reciever has acknowledged / clicked OK on the message. It runs over the network, so nothing to install on clients. Users are picked up from a mysql database. If you wanted to see if it suits your requirements you can drop me a pm.
Domino Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Ignite Realtime: Openfire Server is a free IM server, you can then use a little java client like spark to connect to it. Works very well, especially as you're not supposed to use MSN messenger for intra-company traffic (because they want you to buy OCS)
browolf Posted November 14, 2008 Author Posted November 14, 2008 I was having a poke around and found a very simple java IM called ezim. EZ Intranet Messenger the best bit is, there's an option, it's barely got any options lol but it has one that auto popups incoming messages. woohoo 1
browolf Posted November 14, 2008 Author Posted November 14, 2008 notes about ezim 1. requires java 2. its a bit slow to start up 3. saves config in c:\documents and settings\\.ezim but the config file only exists when the prog is shut 4. uses multicast 5. users have to be on the same subnet mask 6. some people appear twice in the own window for no apparent reason.
spacevortex Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 This thread is a little old but i thought i would add this seeing it did not popup in a search on edugeek Tonic -FREE lan message communication r2 Studios - Software It's not had an update in a long time and works under vista. i have not added it to any staff laptops for over a year but at that time staff were still using it.... and i gather they still do. i only deployed it to the primary section of our federation. it has some good config options and allows you to send files to collegues it does what was and still required, though network improvements and phones in every classroom could of made it less of a required tool. enough of me promoting
sted Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 turn messenger service back on and use net send?
p858snake Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 What about the microsoft communications server stuff, i've never used, but it should intergrate with your domain for users and then you and your staff would have instant messanger with each other as well.
EduTech Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 I have used OpenFire before, it is free and works very well just like the edugeek chat server (as that is based on openfire) with the Spark Client. Failing that, you could use OCS but then that would cost you.. not alot if your on a schools agreement mind James.
