We have an oldish crimping tool, a pair of first aid scissors and a cheap tester. I also have a Fluke OneTouch II for when we want to look flashy for finding sockets on switches, connectivity problems etc:D

As a rule you would use solid core UTP for cable runs (Comms Room to wallplates) and stranded cores for patch leads, which are likely to be flexed more in use.

Other distinctions depend on preference and local rules - we always try to get the purple sheathed stuff as it makes it easy to identity our cables in the roof spaces.

Don't bother making your own cables pre made and tested cables are cheap enough why take the risk that your home made cable might be wrong?

Length of cable cut to the size i want is the reason why i want to make my own cables. i have a box full of pre-made cables ,all of which are the wrong length!!

I have a Test-Um Validator (see Test-Um Validator NT950 Cable Certifier ) - it's great and it will certify your cables for a fraction of the price of a Fluke tester!

Westwood Assocites (tel 01753 881810 and quote EduGeek) can give you a good price on one.

One of my predecessors seemed to have an affinity for ridiculously priced tools so I have a ProsKit crimp tool kit... knowing what they cost I really don't think that it is worth the extra ££s over my Ebay spesh that I use at home!

So could you recommend a company and cable type to purchase and the other bits and bobs i need ?

ADC Krone is our preferred supplier, also, if you're running cabling internally (not for patch leads) it'll need to be Low Smoke Zero Halogen in order to comply with health and saftey regs.

Since when did it become requirement to install LSZH for all works? I knew certain areas needed LSZH but not global LSZH coverage.

My H&S Contact has just told me that he's not aware of any reason why all cabling in a school should be LSZH, he said in some areas and types of work yes, but as an overall generalisation standard is fine for 99% of installations as far as he was aware, but he was going to check wtih another couple of firms for me.
