Linux Training Advice

Hi Guys,

Anybody got any advice as to what would be a good course to take for a Windows administrator who wants an intro to Linux? I have extensive experience with Windows networks but no Linux experience and have an opprtunity through the school's CPD program to take some instructor led training or possibly buy training materials.

Any advice as to good courses gratefully appreciated.

Depending upon what you want to achieve, I'd consider as matt has pointed out the Redhat courses, or if you just want a feel etc consider the Comptia Linux+.

 

Failing that, poke around a bit looking on the net, that's how I've learnt over the years; no bit of paper though.

Issue 110 of Linux Format had a whole feature relating to Linux training... unfortunately that issue isn't available to non-subscribers on the net yet.

 

Linux Format isn't a bad magazine and a subscription isn't very costly - it will give you ideas of things to play with too.

While researching the best 'certs' I decided on LPI and its vendor neutral and looked interesting and why would you want to concentrate on one distro when there is a generic one is beyond me (maybe later on).

RHat is expsensive, Suse is now ms so was put off my that! :)

 

Been studying LPI in a nutshell (Oreilly). There are 3 levels each requiring 2 exams. I think youd only want to do level one or two if your not in a *nix job, or unless you find it fun, lots of spare time etc.. Level 3 is specialised on particular areas

 

What would be nice if I could go on a course pay for by the school say one afternoon a week!! :D Like industry or something but I havent seen the courses so doing in my spare time which takes forever around a family :rolleyes: Exams are £75 quid each

 

Plan on doing at least one level before I leave here though, maybe off to a Linux admin or developer! :)

I did comptia A+ and N+, what a joke, no harder than my 04/05 GCSE paper on the same subject. (yes 2005, I am only 19).

 

I've been using Red Hat since 7.x (Psy) /8.0, switched to debian and then ubuntu. I've picked up what I need to know, but I have no formal qualifications, It would be nice to have them. However I wouldn't spend time doing something comptia again.

You need to do LPI 1 before you do 2 and 3. LPI 1 is not simple

I second this. I've done LPI Level One and it was quite hard. You need to have used Linux for a good while otherwise it's a bit of a trial by fire. I had 10 years of experience & still found parts of it hard as not stuff I used all the time. It is a little dated now as most of it is based round RH7.1 era.

 

I did a 7 day residential course with Firebrand training which was really good but expensive.
