Ah, thanks. Yes, usually Exchange would usually point to internal dns but can also be configured to look outside within the properties of the hub transport role in certain circumstances. Not the most common scenario but worth checking

Is there security filtering on the group policy object? If so is it still in place? Are you using group policy preferences to target the drive to staff only?

Exchange could be configured with external forwarders. Anything that is vlan'd away from your internal DNS and has its own DHCP server (such as enterprise wifi or telephony) may well look outside for dns. Shouldn't be too hard to find out though. Is it common for ransomware to require access to public dns records? Guess so...

Hi All, We are in the early stages of testing Airwatch MDM with iOS. Our devices (iPads) have been upgraded to iOS 7.0. This is the issue - we can't find a way to install free Apps silently, i.e without having to enter the central Apple ID password. Is this even possible? Help very gratefully received. Cheers!

Hi All, SLT here has requested infromation on how much student laptops are being used. What they want is a breakdown, laptop trolley by laptop trolley, of the amount of time they are in use throughout the school week. Is anyone else doing this? If so, how do you do it? Cheers, Stu

Hi All, We are currently using GPOs to map printers but would prefer to use Group policy Preferences (not least because Server 2008R2/W7 combination seems keen on having printers "follow" the user instead of just mapping the printers in the relevant OU) to allow much more flexibility in targetting. The problem that we've come across in testing is that GPP seems limited to spooling print jobs on the local workstation (and not on the print server). This is particularly troublesome where there are multiple computers in one location (i.e. an IT suite). If a dodgy print job blocks the queue then other users cannot print to the same printer until it is cleared. The problem being that the local queue where the dodgy print job is can only be seen on the local machine and, therefore, cannot be cleared by any other user. Obviously it is important that staff can delete student print jobs as necessary. Any suggestions as to how to deal with this? or is it just a limitation of GPPs that we would have to live with? Any help gratefully received! Cheers.

The pay reflects the level of responsibilty. Fundamentally, it is a technical role and, unlike many schools, the role carries very little managerial responsibility. It is the Head of IT Services that carries the managerial can for all aspects of the Academy's IT service delivery as well as being technical lead where required

Thanks SHimmer45. How it has been set up here (not by me) is that you PXE boot the machine and it will offer you a menu. For example, staff laptop type, student desktop type, HP 4515s etc. You get the picture. You select the option you need. Corresponding machine groups have been set up and once the client starts polling the ghost server it appears in the corresponding machine group. You then execute the task to push out the image. Hope this all makes sense!!? So what I have done is created an image for a new client type (and the corresponding deploy task) and a new machine group for same. What i can't work out for the life of me is how to edit the pxe boot menu to offer me a selection that points to the new machine group. Sorry if I'm not very clear with my terminology here, but i am really trying to pick this up on the fly..... Cheers!

Hi All, Apologies for my ignorance but I am still new to ghost.. I am using Ghost Suite 2.5 Basically, I created a deploy (clone) task pointing towards an existing image. I have then created a machine group for the PCs that I want to receive the image. What do I have to do to make that image available on the PXE boot menu? All help gratefully received! Cheers, Stu

Thanks guys. All good suggestions.. I'm not sure you can drill down through Sysvol to the GUID without restoring system state as a whole (at least not with backup exec) but I'll certainly give it a look tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Hi All, I have an issue wherby a GPO(not default domain policy) which has become corrupt. It applies our software restriction policies. Although It still seems to be being applied successfully, it is not editable and shows the following error message: The following errors were encountered: The file "\\server\sysvol\EBS.INTERNAL\Policies\{4AB63E27-A88A-4C6A-93FD-337CC2C0D321}\Machine\registry.pol" is not in a valid format. The file might be corrupt. Use Group Policy Object Editor to reconfigure the settings in this extension. It contains a lot of bespoke settings and, yes, I haven't backed it up using GPMC. Anyone have any ideas re recovery? anyone know if I can retrieve it from a system state backup without doing a full system state restore?? any help gratefully received. Cheers, Stu

Hi All, When logging in for the FIRST time with a newly create domain account I receive the following error message "The user profile service failed the logon" "User profile cannot be loaded" and logon fails. We have W7 accross the board. I have read about this issue where an existing user profile has been deleted but this is for new accounts where a profile has not yet been created. I should also point out that I am using XIA Automation Server to create the accounts. All directory permissions etc, appear to be correct and the new accounts are in the right Security Groups. Any ideas? It's driving me nuts!! Cheers, Stu
