Some members has spotted it for what it is and are now understandably treating the whole thing as a joke, throwing in a little humour and shrugging their shoulders. There are 3 problems. 1 - There has been an issue about what people perceive to be the role of the site and how it has developed. If this has been unclear to people I will paraphrase things from DB, the other admins and the mods. This is a professional site. It has rules to keep that level of professionalism and if those rules have not been clear or have not been fully enforced then we are happy to draw a line here, give you the information and get on with business as usual. I will post at the bottom with this information, giving a few hours for people to calm down and think before making comment. Please also remember that the mods and admins have day jobs and are even known to take holidays and failure to promptly respond to things or even post during the middle of the day may just be down to being busy. The reason why a 'professional' approach is now taken is because we *are* viewed as a group of professionals. That takes some time to sink down to *all* staff in *all* schools but everytime there is a flameware here, use of strong language, inappropriate content or plain abuse ... it just knocks the whole group. We have been asked for regional forums and have set them up, but these will not be taken as serious places for discussion of ideas or service issues unless we act in a professional manner. 2 - There is a thought that this site has sold out and is no longer true to the original idea. The original idea was to have somewhere that IT Professionals from all over the UK (and beyond) could come and share good practice. Yes, it was indeed also set up to get the views of members and that is still the case. However, expressing those views does not mean you can use any language you like or being abusive to those you disagree with or who disagree with you. There are a number of sensitive areas in education ranging from govt projects and initiatives through to management within schools. EduGeek staff may decide to stay neutral, be pro or against particular projects or schemes ... but EduGeek.net as an entity tries to remain neutral. Some people like that, some don't. When a stance is taken, it is usually backed up in a paper or advice piece. This allows EduGeek members to get involved in a variety of projects or give input to projects or schemes. uptake of this has been sporadic but we will always try and give members the opportunity to give their view to the appropriate people. At times this means that people from a variety of companies and agencies will read the forums. There have been times when that has caused issues and even disciplinary action to hit a few members. This is why we stress that you should only post what you are happy for others to see from your school. Whilst members may take lengths to remain anonymous it only takes a few comments that can pin point you and your school, the situation you are talking about and it can land you in hot water. There are times when this has caused trouble for EduGeek.net itself and we do not employ lawyers so it would hit the site hard should things get ugly. Freedom of speech on this site means that you have the freedom to talk in a manner relevant to the community. This is for your protection, the smooth running of the site and, most importantly, to ensure that people are not stretching the limits of what is acceptable or appropriate. There are plenty of places out there if you want to flame or reel off an abusive diatribe. There have been a significant number of threads and PM conversations that have tried to resolve things amicably. there have been demands the EduGeek.net becomes a body to storm the House or Parliament and demand more money, demand more bandwidth, demand the scrapping of BSF, demand that standards for IT are set in schools, demands that standards for IT are not set and then forced onto schools who don't agree with those standards, demand that there by a key for Jake's cage, demand that Jake's cage is welded shut ... ok, the last 2 are a little tongue in cheek but you get the idea. We can take this two ways. Either we say that this is a professional site and we do things with the system or we can become freedom fighters and rant and rave and dress up as superheroes to demand access to our kids. A happy medium has not been forthcoming and we are now at the point of having metathreads. The topic that generates a number of issues is BSF. Love it or loathe it, it gets discussed here. Like it or loathe it, EduGeek.net allows people to give their view but the views are usually balanced out. Some members have asked for an anti-bsf site to be set up or for EduGeek.net to become one. That will not happen. Neither will the site be set up as pro-bsf, pro- or anti-RM, pro- or anti-windows, pro- or anti-Macs, pro- or anti-Jake's Cage. Discussions about these sensitive areas should be conducted in a professional manner. There are so many examples of heated and passionate causes being resolved in discussion rather than frothing mouths. 3 - The mods and admins have taken a lot of flak recently. The admins are busy people (heck, I'm not even meant to be here!) and the Mods work hard to keep things running. Some people have moved onto particular projects and the work they do is fantastic. The group of Mods we have have gone from when we had a few hundred members to 9000. We have more posts each day and a heck of a lot of fresh questions each day. DB has recently posted visitor stats and this is not a simple forum anymore. It takes a significant chunk of work to keep going and whilst we may not always be perfect, we tried hard. Throwing comments in about earning money, unfairly dealing with members and censorship is not fair. In fact it can be damn right insulting. Whilst previous attempts to resolve some of these issues have been done by PM this has obviously not changed the approach of some people to how they conduct themselves on the site. From dredging through previous requests to play nice and not so polite instructions to do as they are told members should do the following: Do not use real or partially censored expletives or strong language. It is likely to offend, be viewed as unprofessional and can cause issues for members. Do not post materials that are dubious as to whether their content may be deemed racially offensive, sexually offensive or in general poor taste. If in doubt ask a Mod or do not post it. Should any mod choose to amend, censor, move, delete or combine any thread or post they do keep a trail for other mods to see. Mods discuss their actions and should you not be happy with the approach taken then you can appeal to the Site Admins via the Message the Admins section. Should you not be happy with the response from Admins then the final judge is Dos_Box. It is his site, his rules. Failure to abide by these rules will incur infractions, which may lead to temporary removal of access or, in extreme cases, removal of membership. The final decision on removal of membership will be made by Dos_Box, or in his absence, the agreement of 2 Site Admins. There is the 'report post' button icon so that mods and admins can see posts that are of concern. Please make use of it. Many members already do. Now, we can all take a deep breath, think hard about how we want to move forward and treat each other with the respect that fellow professionals deserve. 26
