I've just received a request from PC Advisor\IDG Communications asking for our help again with the official BETT supplement.

So if you have any ideas for articles and want to become an amateur journalist then please let me know here as they will need them by the 3rd Nov.

Any limitations on what these articles should relate to? Beyond obviously IT..

I'm more than happy to write something, but I would need a general idea of the sort of articles that they are looking for in the supplement, length you would like them to be etc. then I can probably come up with a few ideas.

OK, the articles should be aimed at predominantly teachers. They should be short, informative and most importantly useful to the readers (again, predominantly teachers). For example I'm going to pen an article entitled 'What do all these things do?' and explain just what all of the network hardware does and what roles servers play. Everything from switches to file servers, from thin client boxes to wireless. All in short easy to understand terms.

A good idea for an article would be a brief overview of just what Active Directory does and what it can do for your school, and then cover Open Directory and Linux too as well as including the useful extra features that third party products offer. Remeber to be balanced and mention downsides too.

Totally agree with you, but let them find out for themselves as they don't give a moments thought for us overworked underpaid magicians of the IT domain (the underworld as many teachers would say).

- UMPC what are they and how can we use them

- MIS systems across the classroom pitfuls to think about (links well to tony's article),

- if we are also aiming at SLT as well then "helping your schools ICT Support departments to improve" aka FITS and other things to make whole process work smoothly.

OK, Paul Trotter, the PC Advisor editor, has just dropped me a line from Lisbon (the lucky git is at a meeting all week there. Apparently the weather is 'nice' )

He tells me that the deadline for our articles is the 15th Nov, so if everyone who is working on one can post the title of it here for me to let him know I'll need it by COP tomorrow (Thursday 23rd Oct). Many thanks.

I can't do anything BSF but I do think an information alert for teachers would be good using the stuff that has come out of Bristol (see NAACE presentations previously posted)

 

I should be able to get one on network design sorted too from someone (VLANs, QoS, etc). I'll confirm later.
