There are tweaks on the Realplayer site, to make it work, but they've never worked for me. So we switched to realalternative Free-Codecs.com :: Download Real Alternative 1.90 : Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player 1
laserblazer Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Remember that the free Realplayer download is not a commercial licence, so you shouldn't distribute it. Real Alternative is THE real alternative. Dead easy to configure the proxy server and works fine. 1

I'd never put either on, can't stand real player. The only way to do it without infringing on any license is with the enterprise license, which wasn't cheap. 1
leco Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 Thanks guys. I don't like RealPlayer either, which is why I haven't put it on before. I think the reason for the order is that teachers want things from the BBC which are only available for Real. Perhaps if I investigate the actual cost of distribution I may be able to persuade the manglement against the idea:D

Although technically you can't use Quicktime and Real and need to sign up for a distribution agreement for the Adobe ones (which is at least free).

It was the alternatives I was referring to, both break the license agreement of the original product to distribute the relevant dlls and codec files on their own. I think there is also an agreement you can sign up for with quicktime too. Although if you read all the small print for everything I don't think we'd ever install anything at all!

The video wouldn't play, first error message said it couldn't connect, so I set the proxy server. Another try and another error message, which I didn't understand at all. Spent all morning trying to sort it out. Tried RealAlternative but that didn't work either. Now not sure if its our machines, RealPlayer, the proxy server or just the video that's the problem. Explained all of this to the year 6 teacher who thankfully understood - though not why she could play it at home and not at work. Could it be anything to do with the YHGfL perhaps? Thanks for the help and tips so far, much appreciated.

I have had very simlar issues with Real Player and have found that you have to install it and then run the registraion process from your 'administrator' account, have you tried this? Paul

Paul No I was logged in as the user who is an administrator. How does it make a difference between my administrator account and a user who is also an administrator?
