Our school is also looking into the possibility of outsourcing there website.

They want the design, implementation, hosting, and updates all to be handled, and for the supplier of this service to be from the UK. Ive been given a rough figure of £1000 a year for such a service.

Anybody got any company's they could recommend?

[This post i suppose is in the same vein as this post here, http://www.edugeek.net/forums/general-chat/19498-do-any-your-schools-outsource-their-websites.html

so apologies for the repetition, however i feel it may warrant a seperate thread as i have a bit more on the spec]

Cheers

Your probably best speaking to your LA to see if they offer any webdesign for their schools. Or if they will setup a CMS (Content Management System) for you to create your own website quite easily. Have a look at the Edugeek Joomla package on the site. It will save a lot of money, but obviously either yourself or someone else will need the knowledge and time to be able to work on it.

We have gone this route. I am not a techie, but with the templates and help from out IT staff we have it up and running.

Showcased it to SLT - thumbs up. I can recommend Joomla although we still have a few tasks left to complete.

Edugeek Joomla is a great way of doing it - all you need to do is pay for some Linux web hosting for £50 or £100 a year and you can set up Joomla and either have a dedicated person updating the website or actually allow staff to update their own parts of the website.

Thank you for the replies.

However the joomla route has been tried, but i have been informed that getting staff to do updates was problematic amongst other things.

Fortunatly or unfortunatly they definatly wish to have this worked on by an external party.

I think with getting an external company the changing and adding content will still need to be the responsibility of the school I would doubt they would be many companies where you e-mail them a load of word documents etc for them to add date plus the turnaround will be even longer getting a third party to add information.

Do you think the external party will be any better at getting updates from staff? Ask anyone on here who has developed a school website about getting material from staff. The majority are indifferent, some are downright aggressive and one, maybe two, are active. It's probably just as well that it's being farmed out as it can be depressing not getting any feedback.

That's how ours is done at the moment which is why we may switch to a CMS system, but to be fair, turnaround is usually no more than 2 days and is usually quicker.
