thats what a sensor is for - detect water level if water level is below this level then device wont turn on, if it is then water will boil as the device will be switched on ( Device being the kettle in this case obviously )

I get the feeling that the WOL kettle won't on it's own be seen as a big development, however it a prerequisite of the WOL technician.

Actually I started an automated kettle once, with: a tea maid thing that my parents used to have; an asterisk phone system; a mains relay; and a door release gadget with a phone interface. Nearly worked

You still have to re-fill or ensure water is in that kettle and I couldn't hear the audio but you would still presumably have to make your own tea and coffee with sugar etc anyway, not to mention pouring milk in and the other stuff in the correct order and with tea , remove the tea bags etc
