webbobfc Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Hi All, I need to upgrade SQL on our Sims server over half term as 2016 is running out of MS support. Is it as simple as just running an in place upgrade of SQL on the Sims server for SQL from 2016 to 19. Anyone had any issues? I logged a call with parentpay and got a KB article about moving servers and un-attaching the database's and reattaching, just wondering if I need to do any of that. I'll have snapshots etc if I need to roll back. We are moving to isams in 27 so want to keep the Sims server ticking over for the next few months doing as little as possible. Any advice appreciated. Tys Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Done in place SQL upgrades on SIMS servers loads of times, tends to be straightforward. Worth running a manual backup first and taking a snapshot of the VM too just in case, so you have an easy way to rollback if it goes wrong, but otherwise it tends not to need anything special in my experience. 1

AGA Posted May 21 Posted May 21 With their guidance we found it was more of a migration between the two SQL instances on the same server. Depending on what you use, there's the need to migrate SOLUS and Discover as well, and there's a fair few caveats. So we opted to have ESS support do it for £425 I watched them the whole time, and assisted with a couple pieces of info. The guy was very knowledgeable, but it still took a long time for him to work through the intricacies, so I was glad to have paid to remove the headache. In case it helps inform your decision.

SlightlyWonky Posted June 18 Posted June 18 @webbobfc How did your in-place SQL 2016 to 2019 go? Any issues to report? The only issue with ESS or local Support guys doing the upgrade is that they spin up a new SQL instance and perform the migration, which means all the third party applications e.g. Biometric Cashless Catering would need reconfiguring (presumably at cost). Please share your experience if any of you have performed in-place upgrade.
webbobfc Posted June 18 Author Posted June 18 I was going to do at half term but didn't get chance so I'm going to try first week of the summer hols when I'll have plenty of time to sort any issues. Fed up with Sims at the moment, can't wait to see the back of it, we are moving to isams next easter, so having to sort all the next gen redirects which are been forced on us that we don't want to do. 1
AGA Posted June 18 Posted June 18 3 of us moving away from SIMS in this thread then. We'll also be on iSAMS by Sep 2027. Have switched off all the next gen redirects they listed. None of our staff are even setup to use it since there was such a poor reaction to it when demoed and trialled. Just ignoring it until we've departed, or they don't let us anymore. 1

Have you managed to change your effective dates in the redirects? ours looks like its going to start redirecting from the 3rd of July. SlightlyWonky Posted June 18 Posted June 18 We are moving to Abor after Oct Half term. Re: redirect. I have changed the date to 1/12/2026 and also disabled it (shows as "not migrated"). But I've been told that despite changing the date/disabling during Stage 2. When Stage 3 starts, delayed date/disabling will be overwritten. So essentially they are forcing us to use Next Gen for Timetables, Attendance Registers and Conduct. Your school is moving to SIMS Next Gen 1

If I write a comment in sims register to say a child was absent for example then later I speak to parent and want to update the comment. Does it show an edit history anywhere? Is there anyway audit that pulls through comment history. I’ve had instances where I’ve had to change a comment as someone has wrote over it by mistake but I want to know if anyone can see any of that. Thanks

webbobfc Posted July 8 Author Posted July 8 Tried the upgrade this morning and ran into issues, had messages that saying that it couldn't find the installation package for ODBC drivers 17 and 18. We use Action1 and I think they have been updated using this which is causing the problems. Think I'm going to try reinstalling the drivers not using Action1 on Friday and give it another go. Rolled back to how we were.

SlightlyWonky Posted July 8 Posted July 8 @BOOT btw, when you did your 2016 - 2019 SQL upgrade on SIMS server, did you have to do any mop ups after the upgrade in regards SIMS or SQL for that matter?
