Sheridan Posted March 12 Posted March 12 I've got a weird issue with a Lenovo laptop thats just out of warranty. It boots and runs Windows absolutely fine, no issues in normal use. The problem is when you power it down the screen goes black, but the power light stays on and the fans keep running. This happens no matter how you shut it down (via the menu, power button etc) - the only way to kill it is to hold the power button down. I thought maybe it was Windows not shutting down cleanly but it also does the same if you power off from the BIOS I've removed the cmos battery overnight which doesn't seem to have made any difference - I'm guessing it may be a motherboard fault but though I'd see if anyone had seen a similar problem? Its also had its BIOS updated but that also had no impact Its annoying as its a fully working laptop in every other sense, but keeps getting returned to us as they say it won't power on - because its stuck in the 'not quite powered off' state!

On those, it was fixed by a firmware update - it seems that Microsoft have managed to develop the shutdown command in Windows to a degree that the hardware actually has to be updated to bother listening to it. 1

I've updated the bios and it hasn't changed. Its one of about 70 we bought all at the same time and so far the only one doing this. I tried nuking the bios by leaving the cmos disconnected overnight but that didn't seem to make any difference

Boredguy Posted March 12 Posted March 12 If you hold down the shift key and select shutdown does it behave then? This forces it to not do the quick shutdown, but a full one.

Beginning to think the m/b is faulty - although it works normally in every other sense

3s-gtech Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Have you tried throwing an absolute wobbler at it? Really let it know how unreasonable it's being. Then try turning off the low-power states in the BIOS.

It might have an emergency reset pinhole as well that disconnects the main battery, seems to fix the "shutdown but not" issue when we get it (Lenovo L13 Yoga)

Then try turning off the low-power states in the BIOS. I argued with it and threatened it but it remains stubborn! Also the bios in it is kak for a 2025 laptop - no power options at all! 1
Mrluckhurst Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Not helpful I know but I had a random HP that would switch back on 30s after turning off all by itself. Never did figure out why
