Thrown in the deep end

Evening,

 

So my new job I've been roped into being the lighting engineer with a show next week.

 

We've had someone on last week who gave the lights a service and replaced loads of bulbs as they had blown.

 

Now to learn MagicQ... I was shown it when the engineer was here and thought I'd got it but I've been in today and I couldn't get it to do what I wanted

 

I think the worst thing is I hate musicals and I really couldn't concentrate as it was so loud in the theatre. I'm back in tomorow for another rehearsal so do you think k it's rude if I wear ear plugs or a headset?

 

I'm sure the software has a logic to it so I'm going in at silly o'clock to sit on my own and get it sorted.. was a bit annoying today when the lights kept going off for the singers.

Ear plugs/headset is sensible to protect your ears - Health and Safety policy would support your actions. I would hope no one objects!

Yeah wear a headset, i'm sure no one will say anything. Youtube will be your friend to learn the software quick. Good luck let us know how it goes!

Your hearing is only good once, protect it. Many of us have paid a price for loud music over the years.

 

Last time I went to a club for a six hour dance music gig I wore ear protectors!

Hard of hearing myself and I echo the comments about wearing some kind of ear protectors. Take care of your ears and eyes. I think we're all aware of watching out for our eyesight but hearing is insidious - you don't notice damage here so easily until its too late.

Just revisiting this. 

 

Has anyone guys tinnitus from during in server rooms? I've had mild symptoms for years working in loud environments when I was young but it's got worse now I'm in my new server room.. didn't realise how bad it was till I got home and sit on the quiet. 

I've been around servers for decades but never had this.

^ Have some pairs of ear defenders in our server room for this. It's not as loud as it was "Back in the day" with massive HP U5 servers, but it does help when you're working in there for long periods of time!

I have ear defenders in the server room. The pitch and volume of the kit is enough to cause damage over time, and I did enough to wreck my ears in my 20s so I look after them now!

Good. Hearing damage from loud noise is cumulative - I'd always say 'wear ear defenders' in environments like a data centre / server room now. I'd say music gigs and theatre work could be an issue too.

25 years ago I worked mid-scale touring bands at a local venue. Earplugs were compulsory then.
