MaryK Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 I've an issue with one of our students. Long story... On a chromebook, logged in as her, the wifi keeps dropping. It doesn't turn off, just drops (still turned on, just dropped). We push out a wifi channel that it connects to automatically. She(we) can reconnect but it will drop again and again. I had her switch chromebooks with another student to rule out faulty wifi card. Same thing happens on her neighbors chromebook. If I sit with her, it rarely drops. I don't believe there is a shortcut key to drop or turn off wifi. We have screen recorded her multiple times for multiple days and she is not touching the settings, the wifi just drops. I have powerwashed, reloaded o/s with a thumb drive, given her 4 different chromebooks (of different ages and manufacturers.). Still can't get the device to stay connected. It's like as soon as she touches it, it drops. At first I thought she was toggling it off, but it's not off....just dropped. I've taught her how to reconnect and she does, but it drops within seconds again. Part 2 - I gave her an iPad. (you don't log into an iPad - right?!). Airplane mode turns on when she walks away. If I sit next to her.... airplane mode turns on. Just proof to me that she's not turning airplane mode on. It's just does it. I did look at "automation" settings on the iPad and nothing is set. I think this student is magnetic! Does ANYONE have an idea or solution.
Danp Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 Is her user account in the same OU as other users?
speakercon Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 The user doesn't have an app assigned to them that is trying to install when they sign in?
MaryK Posted October 14, 2025 Author Posted October 14, 2025 User IS in the same OU as every other student in her grade. Same permissions, same profile path, same same. Nothing is installing at sign in. Common sense tells me somehow she is doing it, but there are no "shortcuts" to dropping of wifi. I've watched her multiple times and screen recorded her and she's not purposefully doing it. Head scratcher.... THANKS
MandyM Posted January 28 Posted January 28 We’re seeing this same issue with four students in our district. Were you able to pinpoint the cause?
MaryK Posted January 28 Author Posted January 28 Sadly, no. Short-term fix was to move her to a stationary desktop in the back of the classroom. Since I originally posted she bounces between her chromebook and the desktop. Somedays her chromebook will work and she stays connected. Yesterday, state testing started and her chromebook physically shuts down...now. She answered 5 questions and poof. Black screen, powered off. Restarted, logged back in, restarted testing and she answered 1 more question and when she clicked "submit" on the question- poof. Black screen, powered off. Played this game for 3 rounds and called it quits. I got nothing but frustration!
MandyM Posted January 28 Posted January 28 In our case, it is consistently the same four users, and we have tested multiple devices with the same results. Recently, a staff member observed two of the students as they worked, and during that time the students were able to complete approximately an hour and a half of work without any connectivity issues. When the staff member briefly left the room to use the restroom, both students lost their connection. After reconnecting and once the staff member resumed monitoring, the students were able to work for an additional two hours without any issues.
Heebeejeebee Posted January 28 Posted January 28 I've see this sort of thing with a dodgy AP but I'd expect it to be more widespread than a select few. Someone have a Flipper perhaps? HBJB
