Corporate Web filtering

Can anyone suggest their choice of web filtering products that can cross over from education to the business world, as I am looking to replace a WebTitan filtering solution?

 

Needs to support users working from laptops at home as well as on-site.

What are the requirements? Number of users? Types of filtering?

 

Is remote filtering a new thing or something they currently do?  This question is important as HR may have to get involved or they may need to run it past legal as filtering, and monitoring, from off site is a big change in employment terms.

 

I've not really dealt with many corporate filters but would probably recommend Fortinet by default. Gonna cost though!

Indeed - much of the recommendation hinges on "what do you already have that might do a job"

Laptops are currently filtered using WebTitan on the go client.

My company uses Netskope. I don't have anything to do with managing it though, so I don't know what it's like in that regard.

The majority of web filtering solutions struggle to do well at both edu and corporate because of the difference in requirements (safeguarding, compliance etc.)

 

We typically recommend WithSecure, Heimdal, or Barracuda WSG, depending on the customers budget and existing infrastructure.

 

Some endpoint protection tools like WithSecure will include it as standard, cutting down on agent bloat. Other vendors are more modular, like Heimdal and Barracuda, so can be bought as a standalone solution.

We use Fortinet / Fortigate. Logs are piped into Fastvue for the edu specific filtering and reporting.

Just an aside. When we had corporate looking at out filtering it was often the complexity and number of options that turned them off initially. However, once they decided to go with Smoothwall, they would often come back later with 'You know, those advanced features we didn't think we needed? Well, we do - can we have some additional training please'. 

 

But yes, filtering requirements are very different for corporate and education.

Are requirements really that different or is it a case of with corporate the answer is always default "no - no questions asked" wheras in education the answer more often than not needs to be "yes - we've figured out how to do it and still be safe".

Well in education, its about protecting the students, in corporations it's more about protecting the business.
So it's somewhat different.
