Music Exams - Listening

Hi,

 

we do GCSE and A level music which has a listening component.  The Students use bog standard headphones and VLC.

 

Do any of you use special headphones for these?

Generally they're done in one room here with speakers and a cd player.  That way the pupils cant mess around, pause etc.

For A Level they are able to go back and forth on the tracks so that wouldn't work.

Bit more background, one of the pupils has complained that they couldn't hear the music clearly.  We test before thew exam and also tested after and could not find an issue.

 

Just wondered it anyone used anything better than bog standard headphones.

We just use bog standard headphones and VLC too.  I think we do let them bring their own headphones in as well, but not 100% on that.

What do they use in their A-Level music lessons? We use the same headphones. That way their classroom and exam experience are the same.

We've always done the Exam in an IT Room with the same headphones that are attached to the PC's

 

TBH the pupil concerned is very high maintenance.  I went up, listened to the tracks and couldn't find anything wrong but changed the headphones anyway.

 

I just want a flavor of what other do.

 

It looks like we will be made to get a 'special set' that are only used for the music exams.

Ah I get you.  is it possible that that pupil does have a hearing impediment of some sort?  If you've tested them and they sound fine then that is all that's required but if the pupil has some ear issues then that would need to be diangoised so they can get special treatment.  I mean it could literally just be ear wax a lot of people with ear wax dont realise what their ears are actually supposed to sound like till it's profesinally removed?

We use a decent quality hifi through speakers...

For general listening exams for all - single laptop with VLC player and speakers

 

For exams where they need to pause, move back etc - individual laptops, no internet,  VLC player and bog standard headphones

Same here for a A level students with a listening exam, USB headphones, VLC, exam accounts, and students fully in control of their individual playback.
