Update:

So been looking at this some more and PeaSoup has given us a trial of their cloud storage which comes with Veeam. The problem is as I have not used Veeam before I am stuck on the best way to use it and how to deploy it. The servers are VMs stored offsite and we have no access to the host. Can Veeam be installed on a VM without host access or would another backup software be better? At my last school we used BackupAssist and that worked really well for file backup so that might be an option.

The file server has already got way too much installed on it already so I'm reluctant to install anything else but we have other VMs that have light use so if Veeam can be installed on a VM can I install it there and still backup the fileserver?

PeaSoup messed up the pricing for one of my Schools, and we ended up with a huge bill at the end of the year.

They also kept increasing the storage without authorisation.

I used to use Altaro a while ago, before Veeam. I was able to back up 2 VMs for free, might be worth looking at? obviously dependent on the size of your school though, it used to suffice for a small school with just a single DC and a fileserver.

I've been with Peasoup for 2 years now, not experienced anything like this personally

We were with Peasoup for 5 years, now with Redstor education bundle, cannot fault it at all.

And to have unlimited storage is amazing.

So I'm still not sure how Veeam should be installed, I.E. can Veeam be installed on a file server that I want to backup or must it be installed on the VM host? The download of Veeam was 13GB so it must take up a lot of resources.

Ideally Veeam should be on it's own VM, or separate machine. Could run it on a spare PC if you really wanted. Best practice is not to install it directly on the host.

I'd give it 8GB of RAM at minimum, ideally more. Most of ours have 16GB plus.

Veeam will go out and install required software on the hosts & VMs when you add them.

You can just add the server to be backed up as a Windows server if you didn't have access to the underlying host. Or just back it up as a file share.

Ideally on it's own physical machine, however it's ok to run it on it's own VM on the hypervisor.

Domain joining isn't best practice & reduces security

Anyone using Redstor, could you give me your current pricing and what they base it on?  I heard it was quite cheap, but when the quote came through it is nothing like what anyone on here is saying.

Redstor - Basic Education Backup

Total £4,050.00

Redstor Basic Education Backup - School Capacity (501 - 1000)
Basic Education Bundle:
Unlimited use of standard products (e.g., Machines, GWS, M365, SIMS, etc.)
Unlimited capacity and users
Unlimited data retention
Malware scanning for suspicious files
Two full copies stored in geographically separate data centres
Fully compliant with DfE/RPA security guidance for backups
Annual upfront contract with no overage costs

Have I overdone something in the quote?  Should I get a second opinion?  £1800 seems much more reasonable, but I'm not sure where I will get that pricing from.  Do any of you have a specific vendor you have gone through to purchase your Redstor?

If only you could have put the pricing for 501 to 1000.  That is the price i was looking for.

ask around, ours is from probrand currently, Verypc do it, JTRS. Play them against eachother. I just made it clear i am looking for redstor, you add no value im buying from the cheapest supplier.

If you already use redstor they can port your backup accounts between Resellers so you dont have to reupload everything

Yes, we also pay way less than this table shows. even if you add vat

We're paying about £6 per month per TB with Google - it's a mix of storage classes using "autoclass"

With autoclass the data starts of as "standard" and progresses to less used and cheaper classes.

If you know when you'll need the backup data (for regular testing of backup procedures) it would be cheaper to pick coldline depending on how often you need the data.

The current prices are archive £0.92/TB, coldline £3.06/TB, Nearline £7.66/TB, standard £15.32/TB

Hi all, I've been following this topic for a while. Reason I've piped up out of the blue is we're a UK Datacentre and I'm interested how you'd prefer the 'ideal' pricing model... Would it be a 'Per TB' model or a pricing model similar to Redstor based on staff (or student) numbers with unlimited storage.

Not looking to spam you all, (far from it) just interested to hear your thoughts whilst remodelling.

From our side per TB. User pricing (unless very well priced) generally works out poor as the majority of students don't have large on-site storage anymore with OneDrive etc, and yet would be the majority bulk of the licenses being paid for

im prefering the new redstor tiering to be fair, its really cheap comparted to the per tb model.

its allowed us to just do full backups because we can, rather than whats mission critical.

I was paying around 6k for 5tb and rationing, whilst im paying more now on the pupil count model, we just made it a compulsory purchase for each school. and now we have our entire google tenancy backed up (25tb) and every server and i dont need to check every now and then for space running out!

More than 6k for 25TB sounds expensive! As I said earlier, we are paying £5.99 per 5TB per month.

Backing up cloud data I have gotten a Synology NAS with 66TB (RAID 6 down to 43TBs) for less than £6k, and that is a one off cost.
