jimmy210195 Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 We've had some reports from staff this week of their BYODs losing connection in some places around the College. We use Aruba Virtual Controller and access points. One of the users having issues, told me that in the staff room his WiFi was showing Connected No Internet but as he moved around the College, it would become Connected again before in another place it dropped out. With it being intermittent and not everybody affected, for example I have full connection in the same rooms he does not, I am struggling to pinpoint what it may be. Has anybody seen anything like this?
robintech Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 Can they do any internet traffic at all or internal sites? , Could be you are on a different VLAN and its untagged for some users on those APs allowingconnection but no traffic
ZeroHour Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 Do you have any RSSI minimums set? Is there a chance the device says connected but they are at the edge of signal strength?
jimmy210195 Posted January 10, 2025 Author Posted January 10, 2025 I have seen two members of staff with the issue now. Both are Android users but that may be coincidence. Checked the IPs, DNS settings etc of the network that was showing as Connected but no internet and all was fine. I put their phone into airplane mode with just the WiFi left on and I could browse to websites such as BBC without a problem. Then had the user open a shopping app and the app complained their was 'No Internet Connection' with a banner at the top but the app was usable and she browse through the store.
Oaktech Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 We used to have this with our old Aruba setup until we went round an tuned the RSSI settings better.
jimmy210195 Posted January 13, 2025 Author Posted January 13, 2025 I've stumbled across the fact that it may be our Smoothwall filter causing the incorrect message. With the filter off, these devices happily show 'Connected', turn it back on and we're back at 'Connected No Internet' but being able to browse the web. Raised a ticket with Smoothwall so awaiting a response there.

Consider whitelisting msftncsi.com and msftconnecttest.com and ensuring your network can ping these addresses - the PCs will be communicating with them via ICMP rather than HTTP and you may need to enable something ICMP related. 1

tom_newton Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 Can you email me your details? Support should be responsive, as while we are down a couple with illness right now it's not a huge backlog (it's something we watch really carefully).
Richie99 Posted June 27, 2025 Posted June 27, 2025 try clearing the data usage and network reset, if you have windows? 1
