Hi there,

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy Youtube premium as a school at all? I did ask a reseller but they aren't sure currently.

We are getting more and more adverts appear in Youtube, despite having them blocked on Smoothwall.

Worse, some of these are somewhat risque - eg A advert that appears on the side of some videos (On a fresh profile) shows a Slavik dating website! (Attached)

I did reach out to smoothwall on this one, but they said that with Google's war on adblockers, it's becoming much harder for them to catch all without breaking Youtube as a whole.

They recommended to me that we push out an adblocker, but given the above war on adblockers this is likely to only be a temporary fix, especially with the end of Manifest V2 addons.

So, I get a more acceptable Heinz ad at school. (No ads at home!).

Netsweeper, but given that we have:

doubleclick.net

pagead2.googlesyndication.com

tpc.googlesyndication.com

googleadservices.com

google-analytics.com

googletagmanager.com

pagead2.googlesyndication.com

etc blocked - partly category and partly url.

We don't have Chromebooks so don't have to allow for them.

I reckon, but I can't test as there are still people using the computers but I would be looking closely at:

ade.googlesyndication.com urls ?

It is turning into a bit of a whack-a-mole exercise.

(I'm having an Ad Blocking binge at the moment).

We use Edge. Ublock Origin extension still works fine, don’t get any ads.

I believe Google are looking at blocking that soon as it's not legal to block the YouTube adverts as per the terms and condiftions you agree to when viewing their videos. I believe smoothwall are doing some tinkering to their filtering system that basically tricks YouTube in to thinking the adverts are being viewed when they are not.

Aye maybe, although if you have uBlock deployed in general to prevent adverts on other websites the fact that it happens to do it on YouTube is I guess... just a nice bonus.

I'm more wary about Edge pulling Manifest V2 extensions like Chrome has which will break uBlock origin anyway - Some reading last night indicates that MS are planning to do this over the coming months so it's a short term solution at best.

We are asking google how schools are *supposed* to do this - it doesnt appear YT premium is available as a school subscription. We believe it should be, we can't be antagonist with folks like Google, we won't win.

Terms and conditions are not law

Sorry for the slightly necro response but did you get an answer about this Tom?

This is something we're looking at at the moment.

I have it on my list to pester Google at BETT if they're there this year!

Even tho we still have uBlock on Edge, that doesn't help when people embedded videos in Powerpoint. This can lead to.. annoyances during staff presentations 😕
