Good morning,

I hope you are all well.

We have recently been experiencing a problem where some staff and students receive a black screen when logging in. This issue occurs randomly and inconsistently. It can happen on a few PCs in one ICT suite or randomly across various PCs on site.

This problem has only started within the last few weeks and happens on a daily basis.

We have not personally experienced this but I have heard on the grapevine that the 2024-09 Cumulative update can cause random black screen issues. If you can remove the 2024-09 Cumulative update on an affected machine and test I bet money that is your issue. It could also be that Microsoft have reissued this cumulative update at some point which would explain why this is not occurring for everyone...

Thank you for your responses.

I have noticed that if we leave it for 10-15 minutes, everything eventually loads.

Will this be fixed by Microsoft, or is there something I can do in the meantime? This is happening on various PCs with different specs.

We are getting this on older PC's which have been upgraded to Windows 11 24H2. (from 23H2)

We're unable to recreate the issue.

Users are unable to get to task manager when it happens, all they can do is log out and back in again which seems to usually fix the issue.

Some affected devices have been reimaged (again to 24H2) and it looks like the issue does not reappear, we're slowly imaging a whole suite one by one and monitoring which devices exhibit the issue. So far none of the reimaged PC's have had a black screen appear at logon.

As above if the PC is left long enough then the desktop does appear.
