Good morning,

 

Controversial question I know but the Media department here who have recently lost their technician is telling me that individual would frequently convert videos from YouTube for students to edit in Adobe etc.

 

The teaching staff in that department didn't know what the technician was using and now find themselves trying to access some blocked sites and tools to achieve the same thing (rightly so in my opinion).

 

So my questions really are about this practice in general, should it not be happening or if it is allowed how to do it securely?

Our response is always:

The school does not condone the downloading of YouTube videos as it would breach the YouTube Terms of Service (below), and if you're doing it without the permission of the original content creator could be in breach of copyright. If you want to obtain an offline copy of the video you would have to contact the original content creator and ask.

It's always been a no from me - i dont care whatever so and so did in your old school 10 years ago im not doing illegal stuff and risking my job so you can play a video in a lazy lesson.

recently had an email from someone saying all the other converter sites had been blocked apart from XYZ.com please can we ensure XYZ.com does not get blocked. Only staff will use it as it's a bit dodgy and opens up random tabs and stuff.

This reminds me of my first job, where we used to spend an hour on a Friday afternoon looking at the most popular site in the web filter and blocking any that where inappropriate.
