I could maybe see a nation state distributing / messing with a shipment of pagers that (with a modern rechargable battery) go bang after X amount of charge cycles or a specific message is delivered.

 

But it's a bit indiscriminate, assumes anyone holding/near the pager is the enemy and wouldn't basic opsec recommend sourcing pagers from multiple sources.

 

Keep an eye out for a massive lawsuit from a pager manufacturer, I guess.

This is an absolutely incredible story. World-changing in its impact, I'd say. After this, what country isn't going to be sitting up and reviewing its supply chain security whilst also brainstorming what similar capabilities it could itself pursue?
