Hopefully we will have our new internet connection in place soon, various geographical problems with there being no fibre in the area and the school being on the other side of a railway track to the rest of the town, plus major building works on two sides of the school...

 

Anyway we have most of the infrastructure in-place and are just waiting for some work on the other side. The solution is some sort of ethernet fibre, from the exchange. In our cabinet we have the Open Reach equipment, powered on and ready to go. The end point is a single mode fibre like you get at home (single plug, except at home it would go into another little box) I am being told that I will need to get this into our equipment somehow. We have a HP Procurve 5406zl core and Aruba switches mostly. I am struggling to find an SFP for our equipment or some sort of media convertor. Does anyone have a similar setup and can suggest equipment etc or are we missing a piece of the puzzle here?

No that will plug into your router, which will then plug into your core.

 

The router should be supplied by the ISP

 

Thank you for confirming that, I thought there was definitely a missing piece as I couldn't get much information on a possible solution.

So, this is how I did it when I worked in schools:

 

We had an "Internet Transport" switch. The Smoothwalls plugged into that switch, and the NTE went into there as well. The Smoothwalls (We had a redundant pair) also were plugged into the core switch, and the core switch used the Smoothwalls as their default gateway.

 

There's no reason why you could replicate the same setup on the core by setting up a VLAN.

The main issue is the connectivity from this equipment, its that single fibre cable and not the usual pair, we are all used to working with. So far it has been suggested there should be a modem on the end of this like a domestic setup and also one of my suppliers is questioning getting this type of single fibre connection into our equipment.

As others have said, your ISP is likely to be fitting their own router. However, even if they didn't. The Access Port is the one with the cover on which will be a standard LC duplex connection (Single Mode or Multi mode depending on how your ISP ordered it). The BiDi simplex connector is the connection from the Openreach kit towards the exchange only.

I don't believe it! I was so focussed on that stray lead and the angle I was looking at it from at the top of the 42U rack (should have studied my own picture better!) I didn't even see the other SFP properly and it is indeed the usual two wire connector!

I’ve had half a dozen ADVA’s installed in work sites over the past few months. Access Port 3 is the one you would connect to your router. You have to leave their sfp in place until that port goes green, then you can replace with your own sfp. We use these ones to go into Cisco routers https://www.fs.com/uk/products/11775.html?now_cid=81 and use some LC-LC Single mode duplex cables to connect them all up

 

Only issue we’ve had with them is if they don’t have the right configuration sent over from the Exchange, but it’s just half an hour for an engineer to swap them out.

Again, ISP should provide the router and SFP module.

 

You would then use the correct copper or fibre connection into your switch

It should be possible to do this, but you shouldn't need to.

If you do you will need an SFP module that you can re-program the serial number and the vendor ID to match the serial/vendor that the ISP expects, you'll also need to know what the serial/vendor ID is - which you usually get from the equipment that the ISP supplies !

You'd only do this if the supplier sends crappy equipment and you need to replace it for something more reliable.

Yes, your ISP should supply you with them. We tried initially with our normal multimode ones and they didn’t work, which is how we found out the ISP had forgotten to include the singlemode’s when shipping the routers to us.

Depends, we often have a 'wires only' service. no ISP router provided.

 

In which case just an LC to LC patch lead between the Adva and our core, or a media converter to go to a Smoothie.

 

The Adva takes in the single mode and usually just has a multimode on the customer end. (provided by Openreach)

 

It's really a link monitoring device for Openreach, often if it's another ISP running over the Openreach network then they tend to provide their own router so they too have some increased visibility of the network.

Your Core switch will not be able to provide NAT function for one but you want a firewall between the Internet and your internal network whatever Edited by Davit2005
