Good Morning,

I have begun supporting a couple of schools and being in my late 40's I know no new slang words (or really care to learn them) however in order to test our filtering I need a list of words to test, can anyone point me in the directrion of a list of keywords that I can download in order to test the filtering and ensure that it is all working?

Any help or guidance is much appreciated.

Regards

Dave

I have "years" on you, so, all the regular words. Then ask pupils or staff (as appropriate), what they are aware of by way of the offensive terms currenlty in use. It can be very nuanced and local.

There's a - now getting slightly older "County Lines" slang directory here, but I have no feel as to how current or useful it is.

For words concerned with safety, your safeguarding lead should be able to help.

You need to add words that are equivilant to all the languages/dialects that your pupil community would use. Not just "British English".

If you're just looking to run a test, then speak to your filtering provider. They should have some test phrases that will trigger a filtering/monitoring response, but get flagged as system tests in any reporting.

My inclination is that "trying to beat" the filter is potentially a dangerous game (if it fails, you might be left with viruses, or adult content... or...)

I would definitely talk to your vendor about what you are trying to achieve - do you want to be sure you have a decent filter (if wo then the folks at the safer internet centre can help) or that your filter is set up and working (in which case testfiltering.com is a good place to start)

Second what Tom said, we just use this once a month and save the results for info. https://swgfl.org.uk/services/test-filtering/

It might be a good place to start, but it is rather lame and inclined to lull you into a false sense of security.

I DO always use it, but look to access other sites - only with the Head's permission - to see if I can get to them as a pupil - particularly anything involving web proxies or one-to-one video chats with strangers, especially the one-to-one chat on Andrew Tate's website (not video, but even so....), which seems to be accessible more often than not.

It still irks me no end when I get the pupil searches for Coca Cola tin images and I get a whole load of alcohol blocks because some of the images were returned from sites that also sell alcohol as I still have to confirm they were false positives, and the pupil has done nothing wrong whatsoever.

Just to confirm that today's episode WAS NOT Smoothwall related.

I suspect those FP's will go away - but only because Google are making it harder for us (by us, I mean all my mates in web filtering, regardless of vendor) to see the origin site of an image.

Different techniques needed in 2025... [watch this space]
