Renfield-64 Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Not sure if this is the correct section for this but I couldn't find anything related. I want to use my Google Nest (mini I think) in a classroom to detect when the noise from the students is too loud. When it gets to that level I want it to make an announcement or play a sound continuously until the noise level drops again. Anyone know if this would be possible? Thanks
Cazab Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Can you not decide yourself what noise level is unacceptable and make that announcement personally?
DrCheese Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Pretty sure you can't do this with your Google Nest.... You need a DB meter
Millgate_Jimbo Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Echoing what DrCheese said above, you can't use the Google Nest for this, they only activate once the activation phrase "ok google" or "hey google" so they won't be able to detect decibel limits and then warn etc outside of that students if they noticed what the device is could probably have a mess around with it like asking for jokes or fart noises
Scifigirl Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 https://www.classcraft.com/blog/classroom-noise-level-monitors/ theres some online ones if you have a camera/mike attached to the whiteboard... or this kind of thing.....https://www.tts-group.co.uk/classroom-sound-meter/1015332.html is out there-- dependant on age or students....

No, otherwise I would be repeatedly doing it throughout the lesson. If the device makes a noise that the kids don't like they might learn to be quiet! - - - Updated - - - https://www.classcraft.com/blog/classroom-noise-level-monitors/ theres some online ones if you have a camera/mike attached to the whiteboard... or this kind of thing.....https://www.tts-group.co.uk/classroom-sound-meter/1015332.html is out there-- dependant on age or students.... Hi, I don't want to buy any additional hardware really. Thanks.
jthompson Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Buy some stickers and don't give them to them if they're noisy. You could crank it up a notch by replacing the stickers with Haribo. To respond more directly to your original query, no, Google Nest or other brand of smart speaker assistant is not going to be able to be adapted to that task. They're too inflexible. A smartphone, perhaps. You'd need a dB meter that can determine whether noise levels are sustained above a certain threshold for a certain period of time (rather than just momentary peaks), to then trigger some event. Is the Tasker app on Android still a thing? Even if you got it to work, I'd argue that you shouldn't want it to. Always better to be rewarding positive behaviour than to be bashing the bad, I feel. Kinda joking about the stickers, but still worth a try.
Renfield-64 Posted June 19, 2024 Author Posted June 19, 2024 Primary school children are way past stickers! Thanks for your reply anyway.
