Upgrading home gaming machine

I'm looking to upgrade my current gaming machine. Now it's long in the tooth - an i5-6500 with 16gb DDR4 and a 3060 12gb graphics card.

 

I'm wanting to upgrade the Motherboard, processor and Ram and keep the graphics card as it seems the processor is starting to struggle a little now.

 

I'm looking at a MicroATX board running a i5-13400f or i5-13500 processor with 32gb DDR5 - 4800.

 

Im unsure if those processors can be overclocked or can run higher than 4800mhz on this board such as 5600mhz - https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-B760M-GAMING-PLUS-WIFI/dp/B0CN3P4YXB

 

The i5-13600 is just outside my price range.

 

Can anyone give advice please.

If you want to overclock one of those i5s you need a KF on the end. If you want bang for your buck look at AMD.

For overclocking just ending in K would do (the F indicates no integrated graphics). You would also need a Z series motherboard.

I wouldn't worry too much about overclocking these days, it makes little difference for gaming.

What your budget?

 

If you are looking for gaming PC and your budget can stretch, I would look at AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

AMD have new processors out soon so you might be able to get some nice deals on their older processors if you can wait a little longer.

In the end, i've decided to buy a i5-13400, with a MSI B760M board and 32Gb (2x16gb) 5600mhz DDR5 RAM and keep the 3060 12Gb GPU.

 

Processor (new boxed) and Ram (new boxed) bought of ebay (£150 & £60) and the board bought for £139.00

 

I was looking at a i7-14600 on ebay but it got to silly money and out of my budget.

From what you have listed I noticed no mention of storage. These days migrating to SSD (or ideally M.2) make a lot of sense (especially for the operating system). There is a full range of gaming requirements now, so spec largely depends on what you want to do with the system (e.g. for Star Citizen you would need a better graphics card for decent performance).
