Switch Replacements

Wow. Looks like they've been heavily influenced by the Unifi controller layout!

They are enterprise switches, so centrally managed software defined.

Does look like an interesting prospect. I recently went through all my switches and worked out replacements for the whole lot. With Unifi i'd need 5 x Pro Max 48 PoE, 7 x Pro Max 24 PoE, 6 x Aggregation, 18 x Pro 48 to cover my site (Based on consolidating wherever i can) and i worked out the cost of them all to about £20k for the whole lot, or a shade under. I'm going to do the same process with TP-Link and see what it would come in at. Even more interesting if the TP-Link L3 stuff is able to cater as a replacement to my ancient 8206zl.

Well after all that looks like I won't be going ahead with it this year now. Turns out we need more than 16 new iPads and the head is kicking off as we don't have enough available for classes. Of course they neglect to mention the fact that they have been putting an iPad in to kids Behaviour plans and taking the devices out of the trollies without telling me. But of course that is my fault because I cannot read the mind of the head! Love getting it in the neck for something they caused....

We're just replacing our core at the minute, with 2 x Aruba 8320 48 port.

 

Edge is mainly sturdy (old) Cisco 2960 that seem to live forever, and refurbs are cheap and reliable. We'll do these over the next few years, but we're a big site with 50 odd edge switches in 6 cabs.....

I did a quick comparison of the switch models i'd be looking at, port options, and prices to see how viable TP-Link are as a ubiquiti alternative.

 

For my own needs going forward, TP-link just lacks a 48 port switch with multi-gig PoE to be a slightly more favorable option in terms of pricing, albeit not a huge one unless your switch count is quite high.

You'll need to add in the cost of the 10gb fiber modules as well so may be worth getting quotes on them as well.

Highly recommend D-Link. Still got some switches 20 years old running, no issues whatsoever but then always have a spare.

New ones are now POE with 4 x 2.5gb poe ports for Wifi 6E APs which are installing

Another one for ubiquiti.

 

I have the Edge MaxLite range - these are the non cloud versions as my edge switches.

 

I have some FS switches to replace some UniFi ones that died and I couldn’t get replacements and I much prefer the UniFi ones!

 

Core is a 2 x DLink DGS-3600S, 24 port 10gb switch which are stacked.

2 x 10GB links?! Wow we've just had funding for dfe connecting classroom WiFi upgrade but have 30 laptops. maybe they should fund all.schools for 10gb and 1gb broadband?!

 

I run 10gb primary and 1gb failover as the only time traffic peaks anywhere near 1gb or over is sending out updates. all other times odd spike at a. few hundred Meg so 10gb is overkill in most places.

I would get them from fs.com. Very cheap and quick shipping.
