Buying projectors in light of EU's law change

So, the EU has passed a law covering the import of lamps with mercury in them, effectively outlawing the lamps used in projectors from various dates (over 2000 lumens from Feb 2027, under 2000 from Feb 2026 I think?)

 

I know we're not directly affected in the UK, but there will likely be a knock on effect I'd guess, as a lot of companies treat the UK and EU as one market (EMEA).

 

Are any of you adjusting your purchase plans to accommodate this? Moving to laser/LED projectors or touchscreens?

 

Or are you sticking with lamp based one in the hope it doesn't end up affecting us?

All our recent purchases for big spaces have been laser projectors.

Anything else gets a large Iiyama touch screen.

We're planning on starting to replace 100 projectors next year, not great timing!

 

Staff here still prefer a projector over a TV (we have some) and are asking for IWB to removed and replaced with normal dry wipe boards. They do have Apple TV and iPads though.

I have stopped specing projector installs - we will run these ones down through their service lives. Many have been replaced with interactive screens. Only real issue will be in the hall, where a laser can replace the current one.

From the position of BenQ, we will phase out lamp based projectors prior to the directive taking effect.

 

According to "Annex III to Directive 2011/65/EU 4(f) -II - Mercury in high pressure mercury vapour lamps used in projectors where an output ≥ 2000 lumen ANSI is required" becomes applicable 24th February 2027.

 

After this date BenQ will continue to service spare lamps when customers need to replace bulbs (according to BenQ's standard warranty terms). We just won't sell lamp based projectors or lamps in the EU (this will also be applicable to the UK).

 

All of our projectors will likely transition to LED or laser based modules (as many of our range have already done) prior to this date as well.

 

We also have a range of interactive flat panels (which you can disable the interactive function if you want to) currently ranging from 65" up to 98" which have tempered reinforced glass and are warrantied for use in education, they also feature cloud based device management, messaging and account services at no additional cost (just require internet access). The latest RX04 range are also all Google EDLA certified giving access to all the native apps.
