If you had been paying attention, you would have noticed that it was not nuclear bombs that caused the reaction that sent Moonbase Alpha on its journey, but a hitherto unrecorded reaction in the nuclear waste that was being stored there. It was also implied in later episodes that the moon's journey had been guided by a higher power or intelligence. This, combined with Victor Bergman's incredible scientific skills and the moon's traversal of space warps and a black hole would account for its ability to remain intact and travel so far and fast.

I think that reference sadly comes from sources much closer to home - supporters of a group who were keen to put their country First (whatever that means).
